Feb. 18, 2005 – Lauren Lewis, a 12-year-old eighth grader at Good Hope School, captured the St. Croix District Spelling Bee at the Juanita Gardine Elementary School on Friday. Lewis's winning words were "rutabaga" and "adminicle" respectfully. Keywan Joseph of Elena L.Christian Junior High School was the second place finisher.
Lewis and Joseph, along with finalists, Kelsey Butler of Church of God Holiness School; Arianne Walcott of St. Mary's School; Isamail Yusuf of IQRA Academy and Rose Padilla of Manor School will compete in the Territorial Spelling Bee on March 18 at the Good Hope School on St. Croix.
Other schools participating in the District Spelling Bee were, Juanita Gardine Elementary, Alfredo Andrews Elementary, Seventh Day Adventist, Alexander Henderson Elementary, Charles H. Emanuel Elementary, St. Croix Christian Academy, St. Patrick's, Free Will Baptist, School of the Good Shepherd, Evelyn M. Williams Elementary, AZ Academy, Lew Muckle Elementary, Ricardo Richards Elementary, Arthur A. Richards Junior High, Pearl B. Larsen Elementary, Country Day, John H. Woodson Junior High, Eulalie Rivera Elementary and Randolph Lockhart Christian School.
The St. Croix District Spelling Bee is sponsored by the Department of Education's Curriculum, Assessment and Technology division, the Virgin Islands Daily News, Innovative, Houghton Mifflin Company and Pearson Caribbean.
