Dec. 21, 2004 – Sen. Lorraine L. Berry on Tuesday afternoon urged Gov. Charles W. Turnbull to issue government paychecks a day early in the spirit of the "Yuletide Season."
However, James O'Bryan, spokesman for Gov. Charles W. Turnbull, said Tuesday evening he was not aware of the senator's request.
"I do not know of any change in the issuing of this week's paychecks," O'Bryan said.
In a release issued from Berry's office Tuesday afternoon, the senator "respectfully" called on Turnbull and Finance Commissioner Bernice Turnbull to release the checks Wednesday, a day before the scheduled government payday Thursday.
Saying the holiday period is a time of heightened pressure as well as joy, Berry urged the governor to grant the early paychecks.
"The 24 hours gained will ease the Yuletide shopping, banking transactions, traffic congestion as well as eliminate unnecessary logistics on the part of the Education Department employees," Berry said in the release. "Anything we can do to help should be considered."
