Dec. 15, 2004 — Deputy Police Chief Herminio Velazquez is asking the residents of St. Croix and the Virgin Islands for help locating U-Roy Alphonso James, a 25-year-old resident of Estate Sion Farm on St. Croix.
Police think his disappearance may be related to a burned-out car found Tuesday night deep in the bush near Creque Dam, Sgt. Thomas Hannah, police spokesman, said Wednesday afternoon.
Hannah said the report of the burning car and the missing person report coincided.
"The signs are there," that the two are related, he said.
James was last seen between 7 and 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Sunny Isles Shopping Center near the V.I. Lottery Office in Estate Sion Farm, according to a release from the chief's office. James was driving a black Toyota Corolla – the same type of car that was found burned.
However, as of early Wednesday afternoon, the police had not found any evidence of a body in or near the burned car.
When last seen James was wearing a white tee shirt and three-quarter length whitish blue jeans. He is described as a dark complexioned black male with black hair, brown eyes, approximately 5 feet 11inches tall, weighing approximately 170 pounds. James has scars of his forehead and chin.
James spends a considerable amount of time in Sion Farm and the Estate Grove Place, police said.
Three times in the last year bodies have been discovered in the charred remains of burned-out vehicles on St. Croix.
Hannah said the rash of grisly crimes points to a group of young people who are "lost." He said only with "everyone working together can we solve some of these problems."
Police ask anyone with information on the whereabouts of James to please call the Virgin Islands Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau at 778-2211 extension 4531, 4528 or Emergency 911. Any information given will be held in the strictest of confidence. "We at the Virgin Islands Police Department are determined to find Mr. James," Velazquez said in the release.
