Dec. 9, 2004 – Police Commissioner Elton Lewis announced Thursday the arrest of a man who reportedly deliberately misrepresented his identity in order to obtain voter registration on St. Croix.
Almelindo Cuevas-Guerrardo, 38, of Estate Orange Grove, St. Croix, was arrested on a warrant signed and issued by Territorial Court Judge Darryl Donohue on charges of Acting in Assumed Character and Fraudulent Claims Upon the Government, Lewis said in a release.
On or about June 7, 2002, it is alleged that he represented himself as being another individual in order to obtain a Virgin Islands Voter Registration Card by presenting the social security number and birth certificate of another person. He is also accused of attempting conceal his actions by presenting to the Board of Elections false documents in order to receive a voter registration card..
Members of the Insular Investigation Bureau launched an investigation, after receiving information from the Board of Election "on the possibility of dual social security numbers being used by two different people, who had obtained voter registration cards," Lewis said.
Bail for Cuevas-Guerrardo was set at $25,000. Unable to post bail, he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections, Lewis said.
Lewis said he would like to thank the lead officer, Detective Mark Conerio of the Insular Investigation Bureau for "his diligence, patience and determination to bring this matter to closure." He also acknowledged appreciation to members of the community for the information that led to the arrest.
He asked anyone with information on any incident in the territory to call the Crime Hotlines at 777-8711 on St. Thomas and 778-4950 on St. Croix or 911. There may be a reward for information that leads to arrest and conviction.
