District's Foster Children Have a New Santa This Year

Nov. 30, 2004 — The Human Services Department has launched a new initiative geared at the foster children in the St. Thomas-St. John District.
Monife Stout, public relations personnel for the department, said Tuesday that the Division of Children, Youth and Family would be collecting gifts for foster children — infants to 18-year-olds — in the district this holiday season.
"This is a new initiative that we're doing," Stout said, adding it was in hope of sharing the joys of the season with the young people in foster care. She added that a similar program might also take place on St. Croix.
Stout encouraged residents to help bring cheer to the young people by donating gift items. She added it does not have to be toys only. Clothing, shoes and books are welcomed but they must be new or in good condition.
Large boxes will be placed outside the Knud Hansen Complex on Saturday and Dec. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. These are the only two days for collection.
"People who are interested can just drive up and drop in their gifts," Stout said.
According to Stout, 172 children are in foster care throughout the territory for the 2004-2005 fiscal year – 94 in the St. Thomas-St. John District and 78 in the district of St. Croix. Their ages range from infancy to 18.
