Celebrating the American Dream – During Education Week

Nov. 12, 2004 — Education Commissioner Dr. Noreen Michael announces that the territory’s public schools will observe American Education Week from November 14th through 20th with various programs, celebrations and open houses.
Commissioner Michael stated, "Helping students achieve is the cornerstone of our work as administrators, teachers, public school employees and parents." This year’s theme, Celebrating the American Dream’, is intended to remind the community that teaching and learning require a team effort between the home and classroom.
It is also important that we, as a community," said the Commissioner, "take the time to reflect on the contributions that our teachers and school-based staff make to our children’s education, welfare and quality of life. These professionals wear many hats. They are teachers, mentors, role models, friends and confidants to our children. The impact of their influence goes far beyond simply that of an academic education. It molds their perceptions of this world, sets a direction for their lives and ultimately their future. Teachers go far beyond the call of duty and we would be remiss if we failed to recognize their efforts."
Also celebrated during the week long observance are: Education Support Professionals Day on Wednesday, November 17th and Substitute Educators Day on Friday, November 19th. Education Support Professionals Day has been set aside as a special day to honor public school secretaries, paraprofessionals/classroom aides, maintenance people, cafeteria workers, bus drivers, and others whose services to schools are invaluable. The newly designated Substitute Educator's Day shows appreciation to the educators who are called upon to replace regularly employed teachers and other school employees who are on sick or other leave. They are a critical link in the education of public school children.
"Schools throughout the territory have planned a number of events and activities to emphasize this team effort," Michael added. "We especially want parents and other community members to take the opportunity to visit our schools, and more importantly, visit your child's classroom, to see for themselves what is being done."
The Commissioner urged parents to check the various media for information about scheduled events at the schools or to contact their children’s schools for dates and times to ensure their participation. Parents and other stakeholders are reminded however, to first visit the principal's office to declare their presence on the campus.
