Voices That Count Conference Sessions Planned on St. Croix, St. Thomas
People with disabilities will have the opportunity to voice their concerns about issues affecting them at the 2004 Voices That Count conference. The conference, which will consist of forums held on St. Thomas and St. Croix, is designed to bring about frank discussion among people with disabilities, representatives of support services and government officials. The St. Croix forums will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 18 and 19 at Gertrude's Restaurant. The St. Thomas forums will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 21 and 22 at the Holiday Inn Windward Passage Hotel. The conference is sponsored by the University of the Virgin Islands – Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VIUCEDD). Vendor, Contest Applications for Ag and Food Fair Available
The St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Committee has announced that Friday, Oct. 22, is the deadline for vendors to submit applications for space at the Nov. 20-21 Agriculture and Food Fair. Dr. Tony Perry to Present VI-EPSCoR Science Lecture on Oct. 22
UVI Professor of Chemistry Dr. Tony Perry will present a lecture titled "Unconventional Natural Sources for Future Drug Discoveries" from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 22. Friday's presentation is part of the ongoing VI-EPSCoR Seminar Series of science lectures. The seminar will be held in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus. It will be available on the St. Croix campus by videoconference in Evans Center Room 401. The series — which is free and open to the public — continues each Friday through Nov. 19. It is hosted by UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, the Division of Science and Mathematics and the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. UVI to Observe Red Ribbon Week on St. Thomas, St. Croix Campuses
Members of the UVI Community will be observing National Red Ribbon Week — an annual effort to raise awareness of drug and alcohol abuse — from Oct. 23 through 31. This year's theme is "I Have the Power to be Drug Free." The week commemorates the 1985 murder of drug enforcement agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena in Mexico.
– On the St. Thomas campus, the Associate Chancellor's Office is organizing activities including a Pledge Day on Monday, Oct. 25, Wear Red Day on Tuesday, Oct. 26, and a residence hall door-decoration contest. – On the St. Croix campus, the Health Services Center is organizing activities that begin with distribution of red ribbons on Oct. 21. Wearers of the ribbons – which are emblazoned with "Say No to Drugs" – show their support for the week's efforts. Articles Sought for 2005 V.I. Agrifest Bulletin; Submission Deadline Is Oct. 29
The VI Agriculture & Food Fair Board is once again soliciting articles of interest to the Virgin Islands community for publication in the 2005 V.I. Agrifest bulletin. The V.I. Agriculture and Food Fair is scheduled for Feb. 19-21, 2005, at the Department of Agriculture Fair Grounds on St. Croix. The fair grounds are located north and west of UVI's St. Croix campus in Estate Lower Love. The theme for the fair is "Keeping Agriculture Alive Through Technology in 2005."
The deadline for submission of articles is Friday, Oct. 29. Articles may be submitted to Kofi Boateng, executive vice president of the fair, to Errol Chichester in the Department of Agriculture, or to Faye Reed at the Commissioner of Agriculture's office. UVI's Little Theatre to Present 'The Mousetrap' Nov. 19-22
The UVI Little Theatre will present Agatha Christie's long running mystery play "The Mousetrap" from Nov. 19 through 22, in the Little Theatre, located on the second floor of the Classroom Administration Building on the St. Thomas campus. Seminars on Business Side of Farming and Fishing Offered on St. Thomas
Free seminars focusing on the business aspects of farming and fishing will be offered by the UVI Small Business Development Center and V.I. Economic Development Authority in October on St. Thomas. The farming seminar, titled "Recordkeeping for Farmers and Business Financing Options" is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26. The fishing seminar, titled "Recordkeeping for Fishermen and Business Funding Options" is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28. Both sessions will be offered at the UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) training Facility in Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Registration for Gemological Institute Course Extended to Oct. 20
The registration deadline for the upcoming Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Accredited Jewelry Professional Program course on St. Thomas has been extended to Oct. 20. Interested individuals are asked to register as soon as possible. The GIA is offering this intensive course in conjunction with the University of the Virgin Islands Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (UVI-CELL) Center.
