Oct. 14, 2004 – Gov. Charles Turnbull on Thursday put his signature on a bill that provides medical, dental and life insurance for government employees.
On Sept. 30, the day before the old policies expired, the Senate had approved the bill. It provides medical insurance through Connecticut General Life Insurance Co., better known as CIGNA, and dental, life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance through Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.
"The approval of these insurance extensions ensures that our government employees will continue to receive affordable health care not only for themselves but also for their families," Turnbull said in a news release.
The plans cover 16,245 employees and retirees as well as their dependents for a total of about 30,000 people.
The policies cover all government employees as well as those employed at the V.I. Port Authority, the University of the Virgin Islands, the St. Thomas East End Medical Center Corp. and Frederiksted Health Care Inc.
Premiums will increase by $3.01 or less under the new plans. Additionally, the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum will go, the release said.
