Oct. 10, 2004 The University of the Virgin Islands Music Department presents the fall semester Concert Band concert, "Shine, Jesus, Shine," Saturday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m., at the Christ Church Methodist church at Market Square.
Concert band director Prof. Austin A. Venzen has featured singers from local elementary, junior and high schools in Concert Band concerts for the past three years. This year, Venzen reached out to adult performers. He asked churches on St. Thomas and St. John to select singers to be featured with the UVI concert band. The response was great, he said.
Most of the singers in the concert are from various churches, Venzen said, which gives the churches a chance to showcase their singers.
Venzen made special mention of St. Ursula's Church on St. John, which will be represented by Eugenia Chapman.
Participating churches include Calvary Baptist, Trinity Methodist, Christ Church Methodist and the St. Thomas Reformed Church.
The concert will also feature solo performances by favorites Malvern Gumbs and Detra Davis. Davis is a UVI music student. Gumbs, an alum of the UVI music program, recently recorded a gospel album.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students, and are available at Nora's Beauty Salon, from concert band members and at the UVI Bookstore and Humanities Division office on the St. Thomas campus. For more information call Venzen at 693-1192.
