Oct. 5, 2004 Yes, there will be sales at most of the stores, face painting and a domino tournament for kids, but Marketplace Saturday also gives you an opportunity for free skin-cancer and blood-pressure screenings.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Marketplace shopping center on St. John.
Jennifer Dale, the shopping center's manager, said all the tenants are contributing to the event in ways appropriate to their businesses. The Health Care Connection is sponsoring the skin cancer and blood pressure screening, while others are doing or sponsoring demonstrations.
Dale said St. John Hardware is bringing in a person to sharpen knives. While this service isn't free, it gives residents a chance to conveniently get their dull knives back in shape.
Marketplace Saturday also includes presentations on faux and decorative painting, woodturning and other crafts.
"The Art Association will do a demonstration of how to paint in pastels," Dale said.
She said the Friends of V.I. National Park as well as park staff will be on hand with environmental information.
And the Animal Care Center of St. John will provide information on caring for pets.
Several musical groups, including St. John's own Love City Pan Dragons, will play on the top floor at various times throughout the day.
Shoppers will receive free gifts while supplies last.
