UVI Community Asked to Join in St. Croix Relay for Life
UVI St. Croix campus Chancellor Jennifer Jackson has issued a call to the entire UVI community to participate in the battle against cancer by joining in the 2004 Relay for Life on St. Croix. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the Relay is a fund raiser involving teams from throughout the Virgin Islands community.
Team members raise funds — this year's overall goal is $100,000 — and participate in a 24-hour walk scheduled to start at 2 p.m. on Oct. 9, and continue through 2 p.m. on Oct. 10, at the St. Croix Educational Complex. UVI's ROTC program enlisted instructor Sergeant Angel Santos, Jr. is coordinating the University's 2004 effort. Santos is encouraging UVI faculty, staff and students to join the effort and to encourage their families and friends to also participate.
Members of the UVI community interested in participating in a team, or those who wish to contribute financially to the effort, can contact Santos at 692-4101 or by e-mail to asantos@uvi.edu.
Fund Raisers Underway for UVI Accounting Association
The Accounting Association of the University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus will hold several fund raising activities to assist with travel expenses for its members to attend the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) Southern Student Conference in Atlanta, Ga. The fund raisers include bake and snack sales, a walk-a-thon and a raffle.
The activities begin with the bake and snack sales to be held in front of the Business Education Building from 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 28, 30 and Oct. 5. To read the full news release, visit the UVI web site.
Remembrance Service for Mary Zayac Scheduled Sept. 29
A remembrance service for the late Mary Zayac, who worked for five years as an instructor and computer specialist at the University of the Virgin Islands, has been scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, at UVI. The service will be held in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on the St. Thomas campus, with a video link to Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus. Friends, colleagues, students and individuals from the Virgin Islands community are invited to attend. A portion of the service will be set aside for individuals who wish to share personal remembrances of Mary.
President Ragster Scheduled on 'Face to Face' Sept. 29
UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster is scheduled to be a guest on the television program "Face to Face" at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29, on WTJX Channel 12.
St. Thomas Campus Bookstore to Close for Inventory Sept. 29 – Oct. 1
The UVI Bookstore on the St. Thomas campus will be closed from Wednesday, Sept. 29, through Friday, Oct. 1, while the staff conducts inventory. The Bookstore will re-open on Monday, Oct. 4.
Sessions Set Sept. 29-30 on Bowling Green State Accounting Master's Program
Information sessions for individuals interested in pursuing a Master's degree in accounting from Bowling Green (Ohio) State University will be presented at the University of the Virgin Islands on Sept. 29 and 30. Bowling Green Prof. Dr. Alan Lord will conduct the sessions as well as personal interviews with interested students. Scholarships and grants for selected individuals who hold a Bachelor's degree in accounting or who are within one year of obtaining that degree. Interested persons must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and must submit a resume and an official college transcript one day prior to meetings with Prof. Lord.
• On the St. Croix campus, Prof. Lord will visit on Wednesday, Sept. 29. Interested persons there should contact Prof. Aubrey Washington at 692-4151 to make individual arrangements.
• On the St. Thomas campus, a session is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Sept. 30, in Business Education Room 207. For more information and to provide transcripts and resumes on St. Thomas, contact Jacinthe Proctor in the Business Division at 693-1300.
Activities Fair to Feature Voter Registration and Introduce Miss UVI Contestants on Sept. 30
The annual UVI St. Thomas campus Activities Fair set for Thursday, Sept. 30, will include events and activities designed to appeal to the entire University community as well as the general public. Informational displays from 16 student organizations and a variety of University offices such as Counseling and Human Resources are planned. Health screening and Virgin Islands voter registration are also scheduled. The formal introduction of the six 2004 Miss UVI contestants will cap the day.
The fair, dubbed UVI September Fest: Putting the Pieces Together, will run in two sessions, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m. at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center.
• Health Screening — 10 a.m.* to 2 p.m. and again from 4* p.m. to 6 p.m. Cholesterol, Blood/Sugar, HIV, Blood Pressure and Weight screening will be offered.
(* Note: Health screening during both sessions starts one hour earlier than general fair events.)
• Student Activities — Displays by Student Government Association, various clubs and student organizations. ID Photos: UVI students registered for the Fall semester, who have not taken their I.D. pictures or who have not updated their I.D.'s can do so at the fair. Students must produce their paid fees payment receipt to qualify.
• Staff — The UVI benefits staff from the Human Resources department will be on hand to speak with UVI employees.
• Voter Registration and Voting Machine Demonstration — The UVI Community and the general public are invited to take advantage of the Sports and Fitness Center's ample parking to accomplish voter registration. Individuals must bring passports, birth certificates or naturalization certificates and Social Security cards.
• Introduction of Miss UVI Contestants — Six students are vying for the title Miss UVI. They will be introduced at 12:15 p.m. during the first session of the Activities Fair. Included are: Jasmine Buttolph, Medina Colbert, Khalilah Gordon, Tamica Lawrence, Davina Martinez and Shakima Stoutt. The contestants will introduce themselves and model UVI clothing from the UVI Bookstore.
• Food and Drink — Food and drink will be offered for sale by various student clubs and organizations. Cultural specialties from such groups as the St. Lucia & Dominica Association and the St. Kitts and Nevis Association will be featured.
The event is co-sponsored by the Student Affairs Office and Human Resources department. Members of the UVI Community can collect a Bookstore campus gift pack at the fair. For more information, call 693-1111.
UVI to Host ODI Tennis Championships Oct. 1 – 3 on St. Croix
The University of the Virgin Islands will host the ODI League Tennis Championships beginning Friday, Oct. 1, and continuing through Sunday, Oct. 3, at the Buccaneer Hotel Tennis Courts on St.Croix. Six of the ODI member Universities – including UVI – will be taking part in the men's and women's singles, doubles, and team championships. Up to 75 matches are expected to take place over the weekend.
In addition to UVI, squads are expected from the following schools on Puerto Rico: UMET, UPR-Ponce, UPR-Aquadilla, UPR-Carolina and Politecnica.
UVI's men will be be led by Alex Dennis, last year's Bronze Medalist in singles and doubles. The men's team also includes Karan Bhagchandani, Gurnish Sahni and Jay Wiltshire. UVI's women's team will include Amber Stein, Nicole Crossman, Kotti Robins and Marelle Sylvester.
Fenella Cooper and Bruce Wray are the UVI coachs for the St. Thomas and St. Croix campuses, respectively. UVI Assistant Athletic Director Erik Heikkila is serving as the ODI Tennis Championship co-director along with Wray.
Play begins Friday afternoon immediately following a captains meeting at noon. Round-robin singles play will continue Friday through Saturday, with doubles play following
through Sunday. Play on both Saturday and Sunday will begin in the early morning, with the exact start time depending on the number of matches scheduled and how late the previous day's play continued.
Admission to the championships is free. All matches are open to the public and will take place at the Buccaneer Hotel's eight-court, professional level tennis facility. CMES Researcher to Present VI-EPSCoR Science Lecture on Friday, Oct 1.
Steve Herzlieb, a research analyst for the Center for Marine and Environmental Studies (CMES) will present the next in the VI-EPSCoR Seminar Series of science lectures at the University of the Virgin Islands from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 1. The title of Herzlieb's presentation is "Coral Reef Video Monitoring." The seminar is free and open to the public.
It will originate in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus and be videoconferenced to Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus. The series continues each Friday through Nov. 19. It is hosted by UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, the Division of Science and Mathematics and the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. UVI St. Croix Alumni Chapter Sets Oct. 1 Meeting to Attract New Members
The University of the Virgin Islands Alumni Association St. Croix Chapter invites all alumni and friends of alumni interested in becoming active members of the Association to a general chapter meeting on Friday, Oct. 1. Woods Hole Researcher to Discuss 'Protected Areas on St. Croix' on Oct. 5
The Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service (VIMAS) on St. Croix and the St. Croix Environmental Association (SEA) will sponsor a presentation on protected areas by Dr. Elizabeth Gladfelter at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at the University of the Virgin Islands Cafetorium on the St. Croix campus. Dr. Gladfelter, former director of the West Indies Lab and currently affiliated with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, will present "Protected Areas on St. Croix: Personal Odysseys, Community Legacy." VI EPSCoR Issues Call for Research Funding Proposals
VI EPSCoR has issued a call for proposals for research funding. Applicants are asked to email or send the proposals to Marilyn Henderson (mhender@uvi.edu) at The University of the Virgin Islands, Center for Marine and Environmental Science, #2 John Brewer's Bay, St. Thomas, VI 00802. The deadline for application is Friday, Oct. 15, and decisions will be made by the end October.
It is expected that EPSCoR will fund incubators for one year at approximately $10,000 each, beginning in January of 2005. For more information about the VI EPSCoR program, see the grant proposal online by following the "Latest Links" selection on the UVI web site .
World Food Day Activities Set Oct. 17 on St. Croix Campus
World Food Day activities will be held on Sunday, Oct. 17, from noon to 6 p.m. on the UVI's St. Croix campus. There will be a food vendors court, a farmers market, food demonstrations, workshops, music, a petting zoo, children's games and guided tours of research facilities at UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station. All interested schools and youth groups are invited to take part in the "Kids CAN Make a Difference" Food Drive and the "House of Cans" competition. Donations will go to local food banks and the Grenada relief effort. World Food Day is sponsored by UVI's Cooperative Extension Service, Agricultural Experiment Station and the V.I. Vendor, Contest Applications for St. Thomas/St. John Ag and Food Fair Available
The St. Thomas-St. John Agriculture and Food Committee has announced that applications for vendors and registration for contests is under way for the Nov. 20-21, 2004, Agriculture and Food Fair.
Vendor applications will be accepted in the areas of educational exhibits, sales (including food, drinks, arts and crafts, plants and livestock), and entertainment and amusements. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, Oct. 22. For more information, please call 693-1080 or 774-5182. Vendor applications are available at the following locations:

Articles Sought for 2005 V.I. Agrifest Bulletin
The VI Agriculture & Food Fair Board is once again soliciting articles of interest to the Virgin Islands community for publication in the 2005 V.I. Agrifest bulletin. The V.I. Agriculture and Food Fair is scheduled for Feb. 19-21, 2005, at the Department of Agriculture Fair Grounds on St. Croix. The fair grounds are located north and west of UVI's St. Croix campus in Estate Lower Love. The theme for the fair is "Keeping Agriculture Alive Through Technology in 2005."
The deadline for submission of articles is Friday Oct. 20, 2004. Articles may be submitted to Kofi Boateng, executive vice president of the fair, to Errol Chichester in the Department of Agriculture, or to Faye Reed at the Commissioner of Agriculture's office. Articles will be accepted by e-mail, fax, diskette or hard copy. Send e-mail to Boateng at kboaten@uvi.edu, his fax number is 692-4085.
