Sept. 21, 2004 – Participants in the Wall2Wall Triathlon Sunday found conditions challenging. Washouts and new potholes made the North Shore Highway just a bit tough to navigate. One biker went down with his bike on the road and might have broken a finger or two.
However, the conditions had little effect on the enthusiasm of the participants. One of them was heard to joke, after he got off his bike, jogged over to where the run trail began and was told he had to run from Cane Beach to Carambola and back: "That's all?"
One of the goals of this first-time event was to attract a wide assortment of people, and it accomplished that. The racers ranged in ages from 11 to 70.
Forty-two people participated on 14 three-person teams. There were a total of 91 participants.
First place overall was taken by Wayne Nichols with time of one hour, 21 minutes and 59 seconds.
The first woman was Theresa Harper with a time of 1:31:25.
The first relay team across the line was the all women's team of "ET" Tiden, Sue Brown and Sue Armstrong with time of 1.23:35. They were also the second overall finishers.
"All had a great time. Well over $2,100 was raised for charity," organizer Ray Lutz said.
After an 800-yard swim over the Wall in Cane Bay, participants took a 16-mile bike ride along the North Shore followed by a 3.1 mile run. All transitions were made at Cane Bay Beach.
