Storm Causes Senate Postponement

Sept. 14, 2004 – Senate sessions scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday on St. Thomas have been postponed because of impending weather, Senate President David Jones announced Tuesday afternoon.
Tropical Storm Jeanne is heading toward the territory. According to the 2 p.m. weather advisory from Radio WVWI, the territory is under a tropical storm warning. The center of the storm was located about 100 miles south southeast of St. Croix.
Rains from the storm were being felt Tuesday afternoon on St. Thomas and St. John. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour, and strengthening is forecast, according to the advisory. Full effects of the storm should be felt about 8 p.m. Tuesday and through the night. Another advisory will be issued at 5 p.m.
There is no official word yet from Government House on government offices and school closings. Spokeswoman Rina Roebuck said the governor's representatives were meeting with the V. I. Territorial Emergency Agency, and word should be out before the 5 p.m. advisory. The VITEMA office said Tuesday the meeting should conclude shortly after 3 p.m.
Jones did not announce when the Senate sessions would be re-scheduled.
