Sept. 7 – The Greathouse and the Whim Plantation Museum store are closed until mid-October. The grounds, however, remain open for free visits and interpretive tours.
David Hayes, acting executive director, said the Landmark Society had to close the Greathouse because miscommunication has set back the removal of the last exhibit, "Pres to Des', Pillar to Post: the Art and Antiquities of a Worldly Bachelor" which closed last month. Also, the new exhibit is not yet ready to go either. He added the opportunity would be used to finish some maintenance in the museum.
The library and archives are operating their normal hours.
According to the Landmark Society's Web site, "Estate Whim is typical of the agricultural plantations originally laid out in the 1730's by the Danish West Indian Company. The first records of ownership were in 1743 and show cotton as being grown on the estate. By 1754 sugar had apparently become the main crop and so it continued until the 1920's when sugar, long since an unprofitable industry on the island, gave way to cattle."
It is located off Centerline Road in Frederiksted.
