SBDC Offers Insurance Planning Seminar on St. Thomas Sept. 8
A seminar titled "Insurance Planning Basics for Businesses" will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at the UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) training facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Presenters will be Kenrick Augustus, Sr., Ray Barry and Gary Smith. Admission is $20. A $5 discount is available to those who pre-register by Tuesday, Sept. 7. For more information call 776-3206.
VI-EPSCoR Science Seminar Series Continues Sept. 10
UVI Prof. Richard Hall and his assistant Tara Steward will present the next in the VI-EPSCoR Seminar Series of science lectures at the University of the Virgin Islands. Their presentation is titled "Neural Circuits in Lobsters." It is scheduled from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10. The seminar is free and open to the public. It will originate in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on UVI's St. Thomas campus and be videoconferenced to Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus.
The series will continue each Friday through Nov. 19. The series is hosted by UVI's Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, the Division of Science and Mathematics and the VI-Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) program. For more information, call 693-1380.
Coed Volleyball League Scheduled on St. Thomas Campus
UVI students, staff and faculty are invited to participate in a coed volleyball league scheduled to begin the second week of September on the St. Thomas campus. Games will be held in the Sports and Fitness Center between 6 and 8 p.m., with each team playing two or three times per week. Teams must include at least three men and three women. They are limited to 10 players. Interested individuals should contact Erik Heikkila at 693-1213.
First Meeting of UVI's St. Thomas Graduating Class of 2005 Set for Sept. 11
All University of the Virgin Islands students on the St. Thomas campus who expect to graduate in 2005 are encouraged to attend the first meeting for prospective graduates on Saturday, Sept. 11. The meeting is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. at the Windward Passage Hotel in Charlotte Amalie. The agenda includes election of class officers and the dissemination of information for seniors. Boning Up on Bones: Forensic Archeology Lecture Set Sept. 13 on St. Croix
Registered Professional Archaeologist David Hayes will discuss his recent forensic archeological project involving the relocation of human remains found in a St. Croix church yard in a lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 13, in the Cafetorium on UVI's St. Croix campus. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will cover what can be learned from older human remains and issues involved in recovery and relocation of such bones. Little Theatre Sets Sept. 20-21 Auditions for Fall Production of The Mousetrap
The University of the Virgin Islands' Little Theatre has announced plans to stage Agatha Christy's "The Mousetrap" in November. The Little Theatre, located in the second floor of the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus, has scheduled auditions for 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 20 and 21. Projected production dates for the popular who-done-it are Nov. 19, 20, 21 and 22. For more information contact Prof. Rosary Harper at 693-1354.
Student Government Association Leaders, Student Council Elected
UVI students on the St. Thomas campus have elected the following individuals to represent them in the Student Government Association.
Officers: Ivan Connor, president; Daryl Pierre Louis, vice president; and Avalyn Goodwin, treasurer.
Student Council – Senators: Seniors: Khalilah Gordon, Malcolm Hodge and Alkin Paul; Juniors: Idesha Brown, Molsaurol Spencer and Shakima Stout; Sophomores: Amarae Blyden-Richards, Ryan Haberman and Michelle Malon; Freshmen: Caldine Brown, Ava Gumbs and Nadja Skeete.
Student Activities Fair-Voter's Registration Set on St. Thomas Campus
A student activities fair and voter registration event on the St. Thomas campus is scheduled in two sessions on Thursday, Sept.30. Session one will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Session two is scheduled from 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Both will be in the Sports and Fitness Center. All students, including part-time and graduate students who now pay Student Activities Fees, are encouraged to participate.
Participants Sought for Planning Committee of Caribbean Debating Competition
The Student Activities Office on the St. Thomas campus is seeking faculty, staff and students interested in serving on the planning committee for the 15th Caribbean Intercollegiate Debating Competition scheduled for the St. Thomas campus in March of 2005. Call 693-1111 for more information.

Queen's Committee Seeks Performers for Miss UVI Competition
The University of the Virgin Islands Queen's Committee is seeking performers for the upcoming Miss UVI competition. Individuals or groups that can perform short skits, dancing, singing, poetry reading, stand-up comedy, stepping and instrumental performances are invited to audition. An open audition will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19, in the Dining Pavilion on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Individuals or groups may register for the auditions by calling 693-1056 or 693-1553.
Remarkable Big Trees Photography Exhibit at UVI's Paiewonsky Library
An exhibit of thirty photographs of some of U.S. Virgin Islands' most remarkable big trees is on display at the University of the Virgin Islands' Ralph M. Paiewonsky Library on the St. Thomas campus. The photos, taken by UVI Prof. Robert Nicholls, are from a project titled "Remarkable Big Trees of Cultural Interest in the USVI." The project was sponsored by UVI and the Urban & Community Forestry Assistance Program. A U.S.V.I. register of big trees has also been created which includes the locations and proportions of 151 of the largest trees on the three islands. The register can be accessed at bigtrees.net. Nicholls, a UVI associate professor of education, served as director for the big trees project. Nicholls can be reached at telephone 693-1184 or by email at rnicholl@uvi.edu. Nicholls also announced that the latest tree book by renowned author Thomas Packenham contains photos and descriptions of baobabs on St. Croix. The book is expected be available locally this September.
