August 21, 2004 St. Croix Christian Church has been around the island for decades, but has not had a settled home. That might be why its members are so innovative when it comes to church activities.
On Sunday an armada of five boats and six kayaks filled with church members made its way to Buck Island for a day of food and activities.
Pastor Gary Moore said the 80 people who made the trip was "a very good showing."
Brian Isherwood was a little disappointed that the waves were too small to do much with his slide board. However, he appeared to be having a lot of fun with his brother Tyler trying to get surf action going.
Other youngsters excitedly talked about seeing a turtle on the way over to the island and then seeing a barracuda while snorkeling. Several snorkelers were treated to a view of a huge ugly lobster protecting its spot in a reef.
Jan Schaefer, one of nine who kayaked out to Buck Island, said the trip was well worth it, "but it was not easy." As she ate her lunch at a picnic table she admitted she was not ready for the trip back yet, "But when the time comes. I will be up to it," she said.
It was the second time she had kayaked out to Buck Island. For others in the group it was their first time for such a crossing.
As a final bit of afternoon entertainment, many sailing back to Green Cay Marina were treated to kite surfers circling their boat and doing tricks.
The Church, which used to meet in a building behind Sunny Isle's Shopping Center, moved to a more permanent location about six months ago.
The St. Croix Christian Church now meets and has offices at #18 Estate Orange Grove, Christiansted, the same building that is the new home for Caribbean Community Theatre.
Worship is at 10:15 on Sundays. For more information about the church call 778-3130 or e-mail sccc@viaccess.net.
