UVI Hosting Island Universities Consortium Meeting

July 30, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands will host a workshop of the Small Islands Developing States Universities Consortium Tuesday through next Friday on the UVI St. Thomas campus.
Under the auspices of the United Nations, the SIDS Universities Consortium meetings will be attended by delegates from the University of Malta, the National University of Singapore, Veerapen University of Mauritius, The National University of Samoa, the University of the West Indies and the University of Puerto Rico, as well as UVI.
The university "is honored to have been selected to host this significant workshop," UVI President LaVerne E. Ragster said. "UVI looks forward to collaborating with the SIDS delegate universities to provide all of our students with the maximum number of growth opportunities."
The opening ceremony is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Reichhold Center for the Arts.
The purpose of the workshop, according to a UVI release, is to provide a forum for exchange among leaders of SIDS universities. Topics to be discussed include sustainable development, collaboration among SIDS universities, and ways of building on the unique strengths of each of the institutions.
For more information about the consortium, call UVI Vice Provost Henry H. Smith at 693-1062 or UVI faculty member Violeta Donovan at 693-1349.
