July 10, 2004 – Saturday has been declared a free admission day to Fort Christiansvaern because of the celebration this week of Alexander Hamilton's years on St. Croix.
This is transitory, and quickly over, but residents are also getting permanent benefits from the celebration.
A taste of one of those permanent benefits was unveiled in the Government House ballroom Friday. St. Croix artist Jan Mitchell pulled the cloth off her working model of a young Alexander Hamilton.
The model was done in clay and 40 inches high. The sculpture will be sent to New York to be made into a seven-foot bronze statue. It is not yet decided whether it will be placed outside the Custom House or the Government House, but it is expected to be in place for the Hamilton celebration next year.
Mitchell, who has been doing sculptures for 42 years, has many sculptures around the island commissioned by residents. Her other major public work is the Lady Justice in front of the Territorial Court. She did that in 1993.
Another permanent addition to the island coming out of the Hamilton celebration is a Hamilton exhibition.
It consists of four display plaques depicting four stages of Hamilton's life. They are entitled Mother, Making Ends Meet, Abundance of Hardship and Fate Intervenes.
The exhibition was on display at the Government House Friday. It was to move to its permanent home in Fort Christiansvaern on Saturday.
