Two V.I. Authors Receive 'Caribbean Writer' Prizes

June 20, 2004 – Two Virgin Islanders are among the five individuals who have been awarded prizes for their literary contributions to Volume 17 of "The Caribbean Writer."
The sponsored awards are given annually to contributors of the international literary anthology published by University of the Virgin Islands. Volume 17 was published last August.
The prize recipients are:
– Winston Nugent, of St. Croix, was awarded the $200 Marguerite-Cobb McKay Prize, which goes to a V.I. author. Nugent, who was born in Jamaica but grew up on St. Croix, works on the V.I. Legislature media staff and has had three books of his poetry published – "Negus," "Blue Rain" and "On Our Island."
– Michael Winston Bachoo, of St. Croix, who received the Charlotte and Isidor Paiewonsky Prize for first-time publication in "The Caribbean Writer." Bachoo, a native of Trinidad who has lived on St. Croix for 35 years, is the director of base refinery operations at Hovensa.
– Willi Chen, a Trinidadian businessman, was given the $500 David Hough Literary Award, which is donated by Sonja Hough, owner of Sonja's Jewelry in Christiansted. Chen is an artist, columnist, set designer, playwright and poet whose literary works have appeared in numerous Caribbean and international publications. His winning work from "The Caribbean Writer" also will appear in a collection of his short stories to be published later this year by Macmillan of London.
– Opal Palmer Adisa, a Jamaican writer, educator, storyteller and consultant currently residing in California, received the $400 Canute A. Brodhurst Prize for fiction.
– Berkley Wendell Semple, a native of Guyana who is a school administrator in New York, was awarded the $300 Daily News Prize for poetry,
"In its continuing mission to encourage creative writing and criticism in the region, 'The Caribbean Writer' publishes book reviews, drama, personal essays, poetry, short fiction, special sections that celebrate the work of acclaimed writers, and translations," the Caribbean Writer Web site states.
Volume 18 will be published later this summer. Submissions are now being accepted for Volume 19; they must be received by Nov. 30.
