June 17, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:

Tito Nieves to Headline Reichhold Center's "Latin Fiesta" Saturday

UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will present a "Latin Fiesta" at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 19. Tito Nieves, considered a legend in the world of salsa, will be the featured performer. Tickets for the program are $45 for covered section seats and $35 for seats in the uncovered section. Travel packages are available from St. Croix and San Juan which start at about $261 from St. Croix and $291 from San Juan. Packages include one ticket to attend the performance, air transportation, hotel accommodations, and ground transportation to and from the venue and to and from the airport/sea plane.
Tickets are available at Parrot Fish (Back Street), Krystal Gifts Galore (Tutu Park Mall), at all Modern Music stores, the UVI Bookstore, Connections on St. John and the Reichhold Center ticketing office. For more information call the ticketing office at 693-1559.
First Homeland Security Training Sessions Concludes Friday on St. Thomas
The first of 12 Homeland Security Training courses scheduled for the Virgin Islands concludes on Friday, June 18, on UVI's St. Thomas campus, with a rescue simulation drill at 9:30 a.m. in the Sports and Fitness Center.
In all, six 40-hours courses will be conducted on St. Thomas and six are planned on St. Croix. The first St. Croix course begins on Monday, June 21. The courses, which are free, cover threat awareness and response to terrorist actions. They are being hosted by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center and the V.I. Law Enforcement Planning Commission. The courses are designed for a wide variety of first responders from police, fire and emergency medical personnel, to those in private security companies and governmental offices. A spokesperson said vacancies still exist in a number of the course sections.
Additional weekday courses on St. Thomas will begin on July 12, July 26, Aug. 9 and Aug. 23. A Saturday-only course on St. Thomas will begin on June 19. Additional weekday courses on St. Croix will begin on July 19, Aug. 2, Aug. 16 and Aug. 30. The Saturday-only course on St. Croix will begin on June 26. Humanities Division Soliciting Instructor Resumes
The UVI humanities division on the St. Thomas campus is soliciting resumes from individuals who are qualified to teach any of the following courses: basic design, survey of world art, selected problems in world art, basic drawing, painting, design, drawing, oil painting and arts and crafts for elementary teachers. SBDC Offers Week of Free Business Counseling on St. Thomas
UVI's Small Business Development Center will offer a weeklong series of free business counseling sessions from June 21 through 25 on St. Thomas. Sessions will be divided into morning (9 a.m. – 11 a.m.) and afternoon (1 p.m. – 3 p.m.) sections. Topics are designed to assist prospective as well as active business owners with planning, management tools, best practices, preventive measures and general hints. Space is limited to five persons per session. Pre-registration by 9 a.m. on Friday, June 18, is required. For details or to pre-register call 776-3206.

UVI-CELL Seeking Prospective Consultants and Trainers
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center will host one-hour orientation sessions for prospective consultants and trainers on St. Croix on Monday, June 21, and on St. Thomas on Thursday, June 24. Sessions begin at 12:30 p.m. and will be held in the SBDC Sunshine Mall office on St. Croix and the SBDC Nisky Center office on St. Thomas. Space is limited. For information call 693-1100.
UVI-CELL Offers OSHA, CPA Review Courses
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center (CELL) offers courses designed for individuals seeking new careers and professional advancement, or those who want to explore a hobby or leisure-time activities. For details call 693-1100, send e-mail, or visit the CELL Web site.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration Courses – St. Thomas
OSHA courses focus on how businesses can reduce occupational injury and illness. Courses are offered in collaboration with Universidad Metropolitana of Puerto Rico.
— OSHA 511 – Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry
Designed for public and private sector personnel, this course covers OSHA policies, procedures, and standards, as well as general industry safety and health principles. Topics include scope and application of the OSHA general industry standards. Special emphasis is placed on those areas that are the most hazardous, using OSHA standards as a guide.

— OSHA 501 – Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for
General Industry
Designed for members of the public or private sector interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour general industry safety and health outreach program to employees and other interested groups. Covers topics required in the 10- and 30- hour programs as well as those that are the most hazardous, using OSHA standards as a guide. Featured are successful instructional approaches and the effective use of visual aids and handouts.
Pre-requisite: OSHA 511 course.
Date: Aug. 3-6; Time: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Location: TBA; Cost: $625
CPA Review Course Offered – St. Thomas
Statistics show individuals who take a review course increase their odds of passing by 77 percent. This course provides individuals preparing to take the CPA exam with a comprehensive review and practical skills. The course covers: auditing and attestation, financial accounting and reporting, regulation, and business environment and concepts.
Date: Aug. 31 – Nov. 6; Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon; Location: TBA; Fee: $1,195 (includes four textbooks and software).
