Henry Menin Appointed to America's Cup Jury

June 7, 2004 – Former St. Thomas Yacht Club Commodore Henry Menin has been named a member of the jury for the 32nd America's Cup. The jury members are selected by sailing clubs representing the defender and challengers for the most prestigious trophy in sailing.
The jury will have broad responsibilities for dispute resolution in racing dispute areas normally handled by an international jury appointed under Appendix M of the Racing Rules of Sailing, and in some commercial disputes that may arise between persons or entities under the jury's jurisdiction.
The jury issued its Rules of Procedures on May 29 and began operations effective that date, according to a release from the event organizers.
The races held to select the challenger and the actual America's Cup races use on-the-water umpires, a position Menin held during the 1999-2000 America's Cup. These umpires give calls for actions taking place during the race, but most other questions are taken to the jury.
Menin also was appointed to the jury for the sailing events of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, and has seen service at numerous other high-level regattas.
A winner of St. Thomas's International Rolex Regatta, Menin is probably best known in Caribbean racing circles as the founder of the Scotiabank Caribbean Optimist Regatta. This event is sailed in 8-foot prams by youth sailors no older than 15 years of age. It frequently challenges the Rolex for the number of boats entered, if not in size of boats or sailors.
Menin and his wife, Fredelle, are in the U.S. Northeast this month, unable to return for the this year's Optimist Regatta, scheduled for June 18-20.
