Lana Vento Charitable Trust Donates to VI-EPSCoR

June 6, 2004 – The Lana Vento Charitable Trust, a private grant maker on St. Thomas, has donated $50,000 to support the V.I. Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, commonly referred to as VI-EPSCoR.
VI-EPSCoR, which is administered through the National Science Foundation, was developed at the University of the Virgin Islands with continuous input from representatives from all sectors in the U.S. Virgin Islands community.
"The University is continually expanding its influence by offering academic and research opportunities that positively impact the community," said Joseph Boschulte, UVI's vice president for Institutional Advancement. "We applaud the Lana Vento Charitable Trust for its donation to VI-EPSCoR, which is a shining example of how the community and UVI can work together to make a difference."
Dr. Henry H. Smith, UVI's vice provost for Research and Public Service and VI-EPSCoR project director, says the donation gives credence to UVI's reputation for excellence.
"This donation by the Lana Vento Charitable Trust is appreciated for its financial value but also for its significance as a tangible demonstration of confidence in the university and commitment to development of the local economy," Smith said.
VI-EPSCoR is designed to expand and enhance the research capability of scientists to compete more successfully for a portion of the nation's federal academic research and development budget, which amounts to about $17 billion.
Through the EPSCoR program, the National Science Foundation aims to partner with the U.S. Virgin Islands to effect lasting improvements in the territory's research infrastructure and the U.S. Virgin Islands' ability to participate in nationally supported research activities.
