Rules Approves PSC, CZM Committee Nominees

May 27, 2004 – In a meeting that lasted barely an hour Thursday morning on St. Croix, the Senate Rules Committee approved the nominations of Yvette Canegata-Jones to a seat on the Public Services Commission and Tyrone Seales to a position on the St. Croix Coastal Zone Management Committee.
Canegata-Jones told the committee that her science background will enable her to pay attention to detail. And she said she will utilize her environmental background and experience on both the regulatory and compliance sides of business to bring balance in relation to the functions of the PSC.
She said her 11 years of service with the Virgin Islands Housing Authority and AARP have put her "at the forefront of many consumer issues, particularly those involving the low-income and senior populations." She also said her computer knowledge will be of use.
Born on St. Croix, Canegata-Jones is AARP's associate director for community services. She is a former VIHA acting assistant executive director and environmental specialist with the Planning and Natural Resources Department. She is pursuing her master's degree in business administration.
Seales told the senators that in agreeing to serve on the CZM committee he was doing his part to make the Virgin Islands in general and St. Croix in particular a better place for the current residents ad well as future generations.
As a CZM committee member, Seales said, his short-term priority would be to review the statutes, federal laws and other information relative to CZM regulatory functions. "The Virgin Islands economy needs to be jump started by providing employment opportunities for all those in need of employment [who] want to work," he said.
"I simply have the interest of the Virgin Islands at heart and really want to try and make a difference for the people," he told the committee.
Born in Frederiksted, Seales holds a master's degree in educational administration and supervision. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of St. Croix-West for 16 years.
Committee members expressed the desire that the two nominees maintain their integrity and the independence as members of the public boards. The approved nominations next will be taken up by the full Senate.
Committee members present at Thursday's hearing were Sen. Roosevelt David, the chair; and Sens. Carlton Dowe, Luis Hill, David Jones and Ronald Russell. Not present were Sens. Lorraine Berry and Douglas Canton Jr.
