St. Croix Newcomer Caribbean Classic Poker Winner

May 14, 2004 – Eight St. Croix residents and two off-island players made it into the Caribbean Classic Poker Tournament finals at Divi Carina Bay Casino on Friday afternoon, and by mutual agreement, all of them came away winners.
Walter Thompson, who recently relocated to St. Croix, finished in first place.
St. Croix residents also came in second and third.
All 10 finalists had agreed that they would split half of the $10,000 in prize money equally — $500 to each player — with the other $5,000 to be awarded to the first three finishers according to the originally specified breakdowns of 50 percent, 30 percent and 20 percent.
So Thompson ended up collecting $3,000 ($2,500 plus $500); the second-place winner got $2,000 ($1,500 plus $500), and the third-place finisher got $1,500 ($1,000 plus $500). For even the seven others who each received $500, it was a tidy take-home award after having paid an entry free of $125.
The tournament got under way on Thursday with 10 tables of up to 10 players each. The winner of each table advanced to Friday's final round.
As Divi Casino general manager Barbara Shattles handed out the cash winnings, she stated that Divi "will be hosting more events like this." The next Caribbean Classic Poker Tournament, again with a total of $10,000 going to the winners, is scheduled for Aug. 21-22, she said, and plans are in the works for a monthly tournament.
For information about entering the August event, contact the casino's Beachcomber's Club or call marketing manager Fran Geocaris at 773-7529, ext.118.
