HEALTH CENTER HOSTING EASY-DOES-IT WALKATHON

May 4, 2004 – Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center will host a two-mile walkathon on May 15 to mark National Hospital Week — and it will be downhill all the way.
The event will begin at 7 a.m. at the health center and end at Cruz Bay Park. A watering station will be set up at Pastory Gardens minigolf.
Participants are asked to contribute a minimum of $5. The money will go to help fund St. John's Dial-A-Ride program.
"We both have similar missions in that we both try to be of service and lend support for the St. John community," Erica McDonald, Myrah Keating Smith administrator, said. of the health center and the transportation program.
McDonald said the health center wanted to host a health-related project to bring the community together. "This is a low-budget walk. It's not 8 Tuff Miles," she said, referring to the grueling eight-mile run from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay held each February.
Dial-A-Ride provides transportation for elderly and handicapped St. John residents and visitors. Services include door-to-door transportation to stores, medical facilities, churches, senior centers and other locations in a wheelchair-accessible van. The agency is funded through United Way of St. Thomas/St. John and the Human Resources Department.
For the walkathon, volunteers are needed to register participants and sell T-shirts. To volunteer, call Carole DeSenne of the St. John Community Foundation at 693-9410.
Registration forms may be filled out from 6:30 to 7 a.m. the day of the event They also can be picked up now at St. John Drug Center and will be available at the Myrah Keating Smith Health Fair set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 12 and 14 on the second floor of the Marketplace shopping center.
