LEAGUE DELAYS TAKING A STAND ON CFO BILL

April 18, 2004 — The League of Women Voters decided on Saturday to put off for a month a decision whether to give the chief financial officer bill before Congress a thumbs up or thumbs down. The debate over Delegate Donna M. Christensen's bill took place at the league's 35th annual meeting.
Everyone seemed to agree that the league had a role to play in educating the public about the bill, but some expressed concern about the organization endorsing the bill.
Some see the proposal as another form of federal receivership. But Christensen has received public support for her bill, particularly from Crucians, according to league member Ana Anita Davila.
League member Lydia Lettsome said the best thing would be to inform the public about any and all proposals to address the territory's financial crisis.
A motion to that effect was approved.
The group then decided that to take a position on the CFO bill at a May 22 meeting.
League President Rosalie Simmonds Ballentine said that would work because Christensen expects the House to take up the bill before the end of May.
"We do owe it to the public to educate them on the ramifications of this bill," she said.
But she added that if the group endorsed the CFO bill, that might "further alienate" the league from the community.
League member Alex Randall said the bill should be explained to the public because there is a "massive misconception" of what it entails. He offered the radio station where he works, WSTA, as a forum for a debate.
