ANTILLES FALLS TO COUNTRY DAY IN QUIZ BOWL

April 7, 2004 — St. Croix Country Day School went undefeated and emerged as the only academic team able to vanquish three-time defending champion Antilles School to win the 2004 Quiz Bowl.
Country Day clinched the victory in round 14, beating Antilles 150 to 340. They also beat Antilles in Round 8, both teams going into that round unbeaten. Country Day's coach, Kevin Marin, pointed to the strengths of individual team members, inspired to bring home a win in the name of their former longtime coach, Guy Roth, now ill on the U.S. mainland.
They even adopted the team's nickname, "Guy's Gals and Guys," to honor Ross.
"Guy is very ill, and our kids are sending their hopes and prayers and blessings to Guy today through their game. They have dedicated all the effort they have put into the process, preparing to win to bring a victory home for Guy, who's hospitalized in New York State," said Marin, coach of the 2004 Quiz Bowl winners.
Antilles coach Alan Eberhard expressed pride in the efforts of his team following its second-place finish. "I was very proud of them because they were down in a couple of the matches and they came back. They just have the fortitude to come back in spite of being down, I was proud of them for that and they stuck with it. They were a bit disappointed in their own performance, but nevertheless I was proud of them," Eberhard said Tuesday.
Marin also had fond words for Antilles School. "I was the founder of that team, and I developed that first Antilles dynasty. The school was nurtured lovingly by my brother, Mark, who was the finest headmaster the school has ever seen," he said. "I have a great love for Antilles, marvelous admiration for Alan, and it had to come down to two fine teams. It made the victory bittersweet in a way, but I'm just delighted we were able to prevail."
Eberhard said by 2005 St. Thomas' premier private school would be back with a team ready to recapture its former domination over the Quiz Bowl. "I think we're going to be right in the mix next year. Country Day has been our rival for the last four years and we've been the winners for the three past years. They're the winners this year. I just want to wish them luck," Eberhart said.
Eight teams competed in this year's contest, held at the Palms Court Harbour View Hotel: Charlotte Amalie High School, Antilles, St. Croix Country Day School, Sts. Peter and Paul School, Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, Good Hope School of St. Croix, St. Croix Central High and the St. Croix Educational Complex.
The Country Day team goes on to compete at the national level later this year in New Orleans.
