April 2, 2004 – The annual St. John Singers spring concert is set for April 18 at St. Ursula's Church in Cruz Bay on St. John.
It will be a program of "beautiful music and a wide range of things," member Nancy Morse said.
A featured work is the Missa Brevis St. Joannis de Deo by Joseph Haydn. Although the piece isn't dated, it is assumed that Haydn composed it in 1775 for the Eisenstadt Convent of the Brothers of Mercy and dedicated it to their patron saint, John of God.
The choral group also will perform a set of 17th century English madrigals on the theme of love, several arrangements of spirituals, Mozart's motet Ave Verum Corpus and two 20th century songs by Gustav Holst.
The St. John Singers is under the direction of John Cahill, who has led the group since its founding more than 20 years ago. A graduate of the Juilliard School, he teaches piano on St. Thomas and St. John and is also an accomplished French horn player.
"John produces a gem of a concert," Morse said.
Albert Lynch, founder and director of the New School of Music on St. Thomas, and a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, will accompany the choir on piano.
The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $5 for children 5 years and under; they're available from choir members and at Connections and also will be sold at the door.
The St. John Singers is partially funded by a grant from the V.I. Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
