MAN SHOT TO DEATH NEAR KIRWAN TERRACE

April 2, 2004 – Police on St. Thomas say they have no suspects and no motive in a Thursday night shooting that left a 32-year-old man dead.
St. Thomas Deputy Police Chief Elvin Fahie Sr. said on Friday that the shooting occurred just after 11:30 p.m. Thursday near the Michael Kirwan Terrace housing community.
"Units responded to reports of shots fired in the area of the housing project," where officers found the victim lying on his back with "multiple gunshot wounds to the body," Fahie said.
The man died at the scene.
Fahie confirmed reports that police had seized a gun found near the victim's body and that it appeared that a gambling game had been in progress when the shooting occurred. However, he could not say if the gambling participants and the victim were confronted by another person, or if an argument stemming from the game led to the shooting.
Fahie declined to comment on reports that the victim had been implicated in previous murders. "Without consulting with homicide detectives, I cannot comment on that," he said.
WVWI Radio reported on Friday that area residents said they heard yelling before gunfire erupted the quiet of the night. The Major Crime Unit is investigating the shooting.
Police did not immediately release the victim's name pending notification of next of kin.
The murder is the fifth in the St. Thomas-St. John district this year and the eighth in the territory.
