March 29, 2004 With St. Croix's East End Marine Park in the works, students from all the islands' schools are invited to create posters or signs to be used at various points around the park.
Students who wish to participate should contact their school principals or teachers.
Posters are due by April 16.
Winners will be announced at the Eco-Fair to be held April 21 through 23 at the St. George Village Botanical Garden.
Bill Rohring, acting director of the Planning and Natural Resources Department's Coastal Zone Management Program, said the signs will go up at bays within the marine park.
"The contest is a way to get kids involved," he said.
According to a news release from the department, those bays include Teague Bay, Smugglers Cover, Cotton Garden Bay, Cramer's park and Turner Hole. Additional signs will be posted at turtle nesting areas and no-take areas.
East End Marine Park Coordinator Conrad Knowles did not return a phone call requesting more information.
Contest sponsors include Mile Mark Watersports, Big Beard's Adventure Tours, Ultimate Bluewater Adventures, Scuba Shack, Scuba West, Cane Bay Dive Shop, Anchor Dive, Dive Experience, Harbor Master Restaurant, and Jones' Marine.
Teachers who need more information should call Knowles at 773-1082, extension 204 or program development specialist Susan Curtis at extension 2203.
