March 24, 2004 – "Relationships" is an adult musical revue that examines male-female interactions through various stages of life. The world premiere of this humorous "on-the-edge" play takes place this weekend at Caribbean Community Theatre's new playhouse, with six performances scheduled through April 4.
The playwright, Alastair King, came to St. Croix at the invitation of his longtime friend David Richards, CCT's veteran director. The two already had worked together for more than 12 years. King's first play, "The Ultimate Man," had its debut at a theater in Stowe, Vt., under Richards' direction. It went on to play in London's West End, the British equivalent of New York's Broadway.
"Christy and the Playboys," a Celtic musical, is another of King's works.
King hand-picked the cast of local actors, actresses and musicians for the premiere of "Relationships."
"The local talent standard is incredibly high," he said, explaining at a rehearsal that the St. Croix production is the first time the play has actually been acted out. "I did readings of the play, but the actors have brought this work to life," he said.
The skits and scenes hone in on various stages of human relationships with humor and insight. The play "takes a look at people we meet along the road of life — and some we would like to avoid," King says. "It's a cross between Carol Burnett and Monty Python."
Most of the scenes incorporate song, he said. The acts have multi-layered significance and include mother-child interactions, teen angst and newlywed blues.
The cast comprises Jerome Agean, Michael Armendariz, Lionel Downer, Natalie Hollins, Peggy Keylin, Amnerys Maldonado-Rivera and Frank Sluss. Richards in addition to directing will be at the piano, joined by Marty Merrick on bass. Eileen Des Jardins is the producer and Mary Sluss in stage manager.
Sponsors of the production are Bronstein, Gillette & Associates, CPAs; Christiansted Apothecary Hall; Crucian Gold; Essentials for the Office; Gotts & Associates Insurance Agency; Island Heritage Insurance Co.; radio stations Mongoose 104.9/Isle 95/Sunny FM 99.5; No Bones Café; Pan American Distributors; Scotiabank; Tropico Management; V.I. Cargo and Barbara Vogt. Grant funding was provided by the V.I. Council on the Arts/National Endowment for the Arts.
Richards says he's looking forward to premiering the play in CCT's new playhouse, located at #18 Orange Grove behind the St. Croix Animal Shelter Thrift Store. "It's a great space," he says. "The acoustics are perfect."
The production promises to be witty, open and enjoyable. King says: "I just want everyone to have a good time and be able to relate to the humor."
"Relationships" opens on Friday at 8 p.m. This weekend there also will be performances Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. In the coming week, the play will be presented on April 1 and 3 at 8 p.m. and April 4 at 4 p.m.
Tickets, available at the door, are $15 for adults and $8 for students, with discounts for CCT members. According to CCT, the play because of its adult themes is not recommended for young people under the age of 13. To make reservations, arrange assistance for the handicapped and/or obtain directions to the theater, call 773-7171.
