V.I. HAS SURF, SMALL CRAFT ADVISORIES; FLOOD WATCH

Feb. 29, 2004 – Wet and grey weather prevailed across the entire region Sunday as a cold front moved slowly southwest across the islands. The movement of the cold front from North to South triggered lines of heavy showers at times, strong gusty winds and low visibilities, said officials at the National Weather Service in San Juan.
Hazardous marine conditions are expected to remain in place through Thursday.
The cloudy skies will continue through Sunday night as the front continues on its south to southeasterly track across the region. Breezy conditions are expected during the night and will remain strong behind the front. In fact, the weather service predicted Sunday afternoon that the strong winds will be present through mid-week due to an area of high pressure emerging from the Carolina coast into the Atlantic.
Not only did the skies turn dark and send some shower activity, the marine conditions also deteriorated. Large north-northwesterly swells arrived on the facing coasts of the islands Sunday. Large breaking waves across reefs, shoals and shorelines are predicted.
On Sunday heavy surf and small craft advisories were posted for the islands of the Northeastern Caribbean to include the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Vieques, Culebra and sections of the Puerto Rico commonwealth. Also, a coastal flood watch was in effect for both Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
There were no reports of any major problems in the territory from Sunday's inclement weather.
