WAPA BOARD OKS LAND PURCHASE, FIBER OPTICS LEASE

Feb. 27, 2004 – Meeting on St. Croix Thursday, the Water and Power Authority governing board approved the purchase of 1.5 acres of land in Estate Diamond and Queens Quarter to serve as a new home for the utility's Line Department, currently located in Estate Richmond.
The land, which will cost WAPA $450,000, holds a 100,000-gallon water storage tank and ground-water wells capable of producing a total of 150,000 gallons of water daily. The wells will supplement the authority's water supply to serve St. Croix's potable water consumers, WAPA's executive director, Alberto Bruno-Vega, said in a release sent out from the authority on Friday.
WAPA's operation will be "streamlined" because the centralized location of the property will provide better traffic circulation and access, the release stated.
The board also voted to allow Bruno-Vega to lease six internal optic fibers from Innovative Communication Corp. within the electrical cable that runs between Red Hook, St. Thomas, and Frank Bay, St. John. The cable holds 24 fibers, the release said.
