Feb. 17, 2004 – Delegate Donna M. Christensen is hosting a public meeting Saturday morning on St. John to hear from constituents about their mail service concerns.
The meeting, which Christensen is billing as one in a series of "listening sessions," will take place from 10 a.m. to noon at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Cruz Bay.
Christensen said in a release issued by her Washington office on Tuesday that she will visit the St. John Post Office prior to the meeting.
"St. Johnians have been asking for an opportunity to put their concerns about postal service on the record," she said, "so we will be holding a session on Saturday in Cruz Bay to hear what they have to say."
Downsizing moves within the U.S. Postal Service last fall resulted in changes within the territory including the current procedure of routing all mail, even inter-island pieces, to Puerto Rico for processing.
On Feb. 2, the delegate hosted a meeting on the topic that took place simultaneously on St. Thomas and St. Croix via teleconference hookup. Participants complained of delivery delays and damaged mail as a result of the changes. (See "Citizens speak out against poor mail service".)
Christensen also asked that constituents submit comments in writing "for the record" to her, as well as directly to postal authorities on the U.S. Postal Service Web site or by calling (800) ASK-USPS — numerically (800) 275-8777.
