Jan. 26, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
STARfest 10 Application Deadline Extended
The application deadline for people interested in participating in STARfest 10 has been extended to Friday, Feb. 6. STARfest, a variety-styled show, has retained its reputation of being "the Virgin Islands' best show." Seasoned performers along with those who may have "undiscovered" talents are encouraged to apply. STARfest will be held on May 8 and 9 at the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Applications are available at: Parrot Fish, Krystal Gifts Galore, the UVI Bookstore and at all Modern Music Stores. For more information call 693-1550.
American Sign Language Class Planned on St. Thomas
The V.I. University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities is planning to offer an American Sign Language Level 1 class on UVI's St. Thomas campus. The VIUCEDD is seeking feedback from interested persons to determine scheduling of the course. This enrichment class — not for academic credit — is open to anyone interested in learning sign language. The cost will be $125 per semester. Stephanie Brown will be the instructor. Agricultural Experiment Station to Host Seminar on Genetic Enhancement of Cassava and Potato Plants
The UVI community is invited to a seminar on the genetic enhancement of cassava and potato plants, featuring scientists from The Netherlands, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, on the St. Croix campus. Krit Raemakers, from Wageningen Agricultural University, will present "Production of Amylose-free Cassava Plants via Particle Gun Bombardment." Nick de Vetten, from the AVEBE B.A. company, will follow with a presentation entitled "New Generation of Amylose-free Potato." Starches from cassava and potato plants are used by the world food industry in soups, sauces, bakery, dairy, snacks and noodles. The seminar is sponsored by the Biotechnology and Agroforestry Program of UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station. The seminar, which is free, will be presented in room 133 of the UVI Research and Extension Center. For details call 692-4020.
St. Thomas Campus Activities
— Tuesday, Jan. 27-Thursday, Jan. 29 – Auditions for "Coming to the Stage" UVI's Apollo Style program. Singers, dancers, musicians, comedians, magicians, poets and others are invited. A $500 prize will be awarded at the show on Saturday, Feb. 28. Auditions take place in the Student Affairs Building. Tapes are also accepted. Call 693-1111 for details.
— Wednesday, Jan. 28 – The BSN Nursing Class of 2004 will host a pizza sale from noon to 1:30 p.m. in front the Nursing Building. Proceeds will go towards the nurses' pinning ceremony.
— Thursday, Jan. 29 – "ABCs of Resume Development" workshop by Verna Rivers in the Counseling and Placement Center Conference Room from 1-2 p.m. as part of a workshop series for Career Development. Call 693-1087 for details.
— Sunday, Feb. 1 – Super Bowl Sunday for students and faculty in the Dining Pavilion at 8 p.m. Pre-game coverage begins at 7 p.m. Call 693-1111 for transportation, sign-up, and details.
St. Croix Campus Activities
— Saturday, Jan. 31 – "A Wicked Welcome Back Bashment" sponsored by the "PYOOR e'dikt'shen" (Club UVIX). Featuring St. Croix DJ Porta, UVI's Wardadli Soldiers and the St. Croix Road March champion Xtaunshun Band. Time: 10 p.m. in the UVI Student Center.
Reichhold Center Season Tickets Now on Sale
Reichhold Center for the Arts 25th Anniversary season tickets are on sale. The season opens Feb. 28 with a show by legendary soul/R&B artist Jeffrey Osborne. For ticket information call the Reichhold Center box office at 693-1559.
"Me & Mrs. Jones" St. Croix Screenings Set Jan. 31, Feb. 1
The UVI Reichhold Center for the Arts will present a screening of the acclaimed film "Me & Mrs. Jones" on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 on St. Croix. The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Croix Educational Complex.
SBDC to Offer St. Croix Seminar on Motivating Employees
UVI's Small Business Development Center will conduct a seminar entitled "Motivating Employees: Maximizing Productivity in the Workplace" from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the SBDC Training Center located in the Sunshine Mall on St. Croix. Admission to the seminar is $20, free admission for UVI employees and students. Refreshments will be served. For more information and to pre-register, call UVI-SBDC at 692-5270.

It's tax time again and UVI's Small Business Development Center on St. Croix has scheduled two related seminars for early February. A seminar titled "It's Tax Time Again: Guidance for Filing Your Taxes" is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at the SBDC's Training Center at the Sunshine Mall. Admission is $15 for those who pre-register before Jan. 30, and $20 after that time. Admission is free for UVI employees and students.
A second seminar – titled "Your Credit Report: Checking Your Record and Keeping it Straight!" – is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the SBDC's Training Center at the Sunshine Mall. Admission is $15 for those who pre-register before Feb. 6, and $20 after that time. Admission is free for UVI employees and students. Refreshments will be served. Seeking Volunteer Cooks for Afternoon on the Green 2004
Volunteer cooks are needed for UVI's Afternoon on the Green. Scheduled for March 14, Afternoon on the Green is UVI's annual food, family and fun "friendraiser." It features foods based on recipes from around the world. Samples of the dishes prepared by volunteers will be sold at the event. Volunteers are also needed to serve at the event. For details call UVI's institutional advancement office at 693-1040. Proceeds from Afternoon on the Green are used to help fund programs and services for UVI students and faculty.
