Jan. 12, 2004 – The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
President Ragster Invites University Community to Spring Convocation
UVI President Dr. LaVerne E. Ragster has extended an invitation to the entire university community to attend the Spring 2004 University Convocation at 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20. The Convocation will be conducted via teleconference from Evans Center Room 401, Evans Center Room 718 and Evans Center Room 302A on the St. Croix campus and Business Education Room 110, Teacher Education Room 101 and Teacher Education Room 213 on the St. Thomas campus. It is an opportunity for UVI to take a look at the year ahead.
Reichhold Center Season Tickets Now On Sale
The 25th Anniversary celebration of the UVI Reichhold Center for the Arts continues with the new season line-up. The season — which opens Feb. 28 with legendary soul/R&B artist Jeffrey Osborne — includes a phenomenal modern dance company, Caribbean comedy featuring one of the region's best, a Latin festival that's sure to make you get up and dance, and an exposition of the Virgin Islands' finest talent. Spring Semester Classes Under Way; UVI to Observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Spring semester classes began on Saturday, Jan. 10. The Add/Drop period runs Jan. 12 and 13. UVI will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Here is a link to the UVI Academic Calendar, or visit the UVI Web site.
Non-Teaching Staff Council to Meet Tuesday, Jan. 13; Draft By-laws On-line
A videoconferenced meeting of UVI's non-teaching staff organization is scheduled for noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13. The St. Thomas session will take place in Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110). The St. Croix session will take place in the Theatre (Evans Center Room 401). Reports from the organization's sub-committees will be presented. Organization sub-committees include: Constitution/ By-laws; Public Relations/ Membership; Needs Assessment; and Staff Representation to the UVI Board of Trustees. For more information call 693-1111.

SBDC on St. Croix Offers Workshop on Web Site Design
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) on St. Croix will conduct a two-day "Introduction to Designing a Web Site" workshop on Tuesday and Thursday, Jan. 13 and 15. Both sessions will be held at the UVI-SBDC training center located in the Sunshine Mall lower level from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $30. Space is limited. Please call 692-5270 for more information.
Admission to the workshop is free for UVI employees and students with valid identification.
UVI-SBDC Offers Time Management Seminar on St. Thomas on Jan. 14
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer a seminar on time management from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14. "Time Management: The Basics for Your Success" will be presented by Frederick Handleman, Esq. The seminar will cover the basics of time management, including making decisions, setting goals, and scheduling activities, and how to apply these ingredients to participants' personal and professional needs. The seminar will be held at the SBDC training facility at Nisky Center, Suite 720. Pre-registration is required. Admission to the seminar is $20. Admission for UVI faculty, staff and students is free, but they must pre-register. For more information call 776-3206.
V.I. Historians to Focus on 'Inter-Island' Connections at Annual Conference
The 16th annual conference of the Society of Virgin Islands Historians will be held Saturday, Jan. 17. This year's theme is Inter-Island Connections in Historical Perspective. The conference — co-sponsored by the UVI's humanities department – will originate on UVI's St. Croix campus with a video link to the St. Thomas campus. A highlight of the conference will be a screening of the award-winning documentary film "Vieques: An Island Forging Futures." The film's creator, Johanna Bermudez-Ruiz, is a native Crucian who now lives and works in New York. The conference runs from 9 to 11:45 a.m. It will originate in Evans Center Room 401, on the St. Croix Campus with a video link to Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110) on the St. Thomas Campus. STARfest 10 Applications Now Available; Show Scheduled for May 8 and 9
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts is seeking participants for its annual talent exhibition, STARfest 10, which is scheduled for May 8 and 9. Applications are available at Parrot Fish, Krystal Gifts Galore, the UVI Bookstore and at all Modern Music Stores. The deadline for submission is Friday, Jan. 23. For more information call 693-1550.
"Me & Mrs. Jones" St. Croix Screenings Set Jan. 31, Feb. 1
UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts will present a screening of the acclaimed film "Me & Mrs. Jones" on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 on St. Croix. The screening begins at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Croix Educational Complex. Produced, directed and co-written by Virgin Islander Edward LaBorde Jr., the film enjoyed a sold-out Caribbean premiere at the Reichhold Center on St. Thomas. Seeking Volunteer Cooks for Afternoon on the Green 2004
UVI's Afternoon on the Green committee is seeking volunteer cooks for the March 14 event. Afternoon on the Green — UVI's annual food, family and fun "friendraiser" — features food based on recipes from around the world. Volunteers are asked to donate a cooked dish, samples of which will be sold at the event. All members of the UVI family are encouraged to contribute a cooked dish and to have their families and friends contribute cooked dishes also. To volunteer, call the institutional advancement office at 693-1040. Proceeds from Afternoon on the Green are used to help fund programs and services for UVI students and faculty.
UVI-CELL Offers Variety of Courses
UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center (CELL) offers a variety of courses designed to providing the tools needed for success to individuals pursuing new careers, working to advance in their current professions or to those who simply want to explore a hobby or leisure-time activities. AutoCAD 2002 Course offered by UVI-CELL on St. Thomas
A course in computer-aided drafting – AutoCAD 2002 – will be offered from Jan. 13 through March 18 on St. Thomas by UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning Center. The course, designed for employees of utility companies, civil engineering and architectural firms will provide a hands-on, practical approach to learning AutoCAD 2002. Course meetings are scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 13 to March 18. They will take place in Teacher Education room 216 on the St. Thomas campus. Basic Web Design
A course in Basic Web Design will be offered from Jan. 20 through Feb. 12 on St. Thomas. Learn what it takes to create an effective, professional and attention-getting Web site. This hands-on course will provide you with valuable tips on how a Web site is planned, structured and actually designed from the ground up. Classes will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Teacher Education Room 216. Fee: $425.
Money Management: Building Bridges to Financial Wealth
A course in Money Management will be offered from Jan. 21 through Feb. 25 on St. Thomas. Enhance your money management skills and improve your financial health with this course designed to help put you on the road to financial wealth. Instructors will be Michael J. Kelleher and Christopher E. Margolin of UBS Financial Services, Inc. Classes will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays in Teacher Education Room 216. Fee: $99.
Appraisers and Brokers Prep Course Rescheduled
The preparation course for the Real Estate Appraisers and Brokers Exam has been rescheduled to Feb. 21 on St. Croix. The course is designed to provide appraisers and brokers with in-depth information for the exam. The course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, in room C-100 (across from the Greathouse) on UVI's St. Croix campus. The fee for the course is $100. The Real Estate Appraisers and Brokers prep course is part of CELL's Real Estate Salesperson course series scheduled on St. Croix during January and February.
