GERMAN TV STATION TO AIR TRAVEL PROGRAM ON V.I.

Dec. 22, 2003 – A German television production crew has completed the recording of material in the Virgin Islands for a documentary travel series, according to a release from the territory's mainland publicity agency, Martin Public Relations.
The crew from ARD/German Television, the first non-commercial television channel in Germany, began working at the start of December, visiting St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. The program to be produced will be part of a series called "Weltreisen," or "World Travels," beginning on Jan. 18.
"The popular travel program, which is 30 minutes in length, airs on Sunday afternoons and is seen by nearly three million viewers in Germany and neighboring countries," the release stated. In addition, it said, "ARD also will air a 45-minute version of the documentary on Sunday evenings."
The Tourism Department, which includes the territory's Film Promotion Office, worked with the company while it was in the territory.
With a focus on Virgin Islands history and culture, the release stated, "the crew sought out the assistance of local bands, dancers, mocko jumbies, eco-tour providers, craftspeople, National Park staff, representatives from the Cruzan Rum factory and many others." But also to be featured, it said, is information about "watersports in the islands, including snorkeling and sailing, as well as land-based activities like shopping and sightseeing."
