CFVI ANNOUNCES TEACHER AWARDS

Dec. 17, 2003 — The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands announced that it has awarded $22,000 to 47 public school teachers on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. The teacher grant awards are provided by the CFVI's Anderson Family Fund for Education, which was established to improve public education for economically disadvantaged children in the USVI by supporting educational enrichment programs unavailable as part of the regular school curriculum.
"The Anderson Family and the Topa companies are very pleased to support the Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands," said John E. Anderson, chairman of Topa. "These funds will be put to good use in many different community-oriented projects in the Virgin Islands."
Last year the fund distributed $20,000 in 34 grants.
A committee of volunteers from the community carried out the difficult task of evaluating proposals and awarding the grants to a pool of 95 applicants. Awards ranged from $1,000 to $200.
Priority was given to proposals which implemented direct student involvement, creative strategies, and activities designed to improve student learning.
Established in 1990 to serve the children and families of the Virgin Islands, the CFVI in 2003 awarded close to a half million dollars in grants, scholarships and services to charities, nonprofit organizations, families and individuals in the USVI.
Individuals or businesses wishing to know more about the CFVI or establishing a fund should call 774-6031.
