Final Exams Continuing through Dec. 14
Final exams at UVI are continuing through Sunday, Dec. 14. Instructors are to submit grades by 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15. The fall semester ends for students on Dec. 14 and for faculty on Dec. 15.
UVI CELL (Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning) Web Site Now Available
A new name and a new Web site are the news for UVI's Community Engagement and Lifelong Learning (CELL) Center – formerly known as the Community and Personal Development Unit. CELL is a one-stop consultancy center for industry and government needs in the areas of research, technical issues and training, business problems or organizational change. CELL provides a pool of expertise that capitalizes on the University's faculty, staff, students and affiliates. To learn more visit the CELL Web site . St. Thomas Campus Student Orientation Schedule for Spring 2004 Posted
The St. Thomas campus student orientation schedule for the Spring 2004 semester is now available on the UVI home page (see link below). Spring classes are scheduled to begin on Jan. 10, 2004.
St. Thomas/St. John Ag Fair Raffle Slated for Dec. 14
The St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair raffle will be drawn during the Agriculture Department's annual party to be held at 8 p.m. Dec. 14 at the department's compound in Estate Dorothea. Raffle winners will receive:
— First prize – a calf
— Second prize – five fruit trees
— Third prize – three bags of seed
— Fourth prize – a UVI Cooperative Extension Service cookbook and medicinal plant book; and a small jar of honey.

UVI Sets Model Farm Opening Ceremonies for Dec. 14
A public opening ceremony for the UVI Integrated Model Farm Project, originally scheduled for Nov. 16, has been rescheduled for Sunday, Dec. 14. The farm, situated on five acres of land adjacent to the St. Croix campus, was developed by UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station. It includes rainwater collection systems, holding ponds, tanks for raising fish and an irrigation system which uses the effluent from the fish tanks.
UVI Professor Dr. James Rakocy, one of the farm's developers, said the model farm represents the best of 30 years of experimentation and work at developing sustainable and economically viable agricultural systems for the Caribbean. CES to Offer Free Eco-Hike Guide Training on St. Croix
A free Eco-Hike Guide Training Workshop will be offered at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, by the UVI Cooperative Extension Service's Agriculture and Natural Resources Program. The workshop will take place on UVI's St. Croix campus in room 133 of the Research and Extension Center. A field trip for guide training will follow at the Caledonia Valley Tropical Forest from 3 to 5 p.m.
The workshop is part of the CES's Environmental Education Program that helps residents to understand and appreciate the unique resources in the Virgin Islands' complex ecosystem. For more information contact Olasee Davis at 692-4053 or 692-4069.
Family Life Center Book Drive Will Conclude on Dec. 15
The UVI Family Life Center (FLC) on the St. Thomas campus is conducting a book drive to procure reading books for children in the program. The goal is to give each child in the UVI-FLC program at least one book to take home to read over the holidays. Children in the program attend the M. J. Kirwan Elementary. New and used books are welcome. They should be appropriate for children ages nine through 12. The deadline for collection is Dec. 15.
Book drop-off points are: the Ralph Paiewonsky Library, the president's office, the Bookstore, the Chancellor's office, the physical plant, the food pavilion, the admissions office, and the nurse's office. For more information call 693-1126, 693-1123 or 693-1122.
Seeking Volunteer Cooks for Afternoon on the Green 2004
UVI's Afternoon on the Green Committee is seeking volunteer cooks for the March 14 event. Afternoon on the Green — UVI's annual food, family and fun "friendraiser" — features food based on recipes from around the world. Volunteers are asked to donate a cooked dish, samples of which will be sold at the event. Members of the UVI family are encouraged to contribute a cooked dish and to have their families and friends contribute cooked dishes also. To volunteer, call the institutional advancement office at 693-1040. Proceeds from Afternoon on the Green are used to help fund programs and services for UVI students and faculty.
