4TH V.I. KIDS COUNT REPORT TO BE RELEASED DEC. 9

Dec. 1, 2003 – The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands will release its 4th annual V.I. Kids Count statistical report on the socioeconomic status of the territory's children on Dec. 9, when it also will announce the recipients of its 2nd annual Silverbells and Cockleshells Awards.
The foundation is hosting a community forum to present the 2003 Kids Count Data Book, titled "Our Children Now! Getting Off to a Good Start," and recognize this year's award recipients. It will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Marriott Frenchman's Reef Beach Resort on St. Thomas and is open to the public on a space-available basis.
V.I. Kids Count is part of a nationwide survey of the economic and social status of America's children funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. It's a collaborative effort of the Community Foundation, the University of the Virgin Islands, and the Education, Health, Human Services and Police Departments.
The community forum will begin with presentations on the 2003 Kids Count findings — an overview and a discussion of early childhood care in the Virgin Islands. A second session will cover options for parents and self-sufficiency for families, along with announcement of the not-for-profit community organizations and individuals being recognized with 2003 Silverbells and Cockleshells Awards.
A question-and-answer period will follow.
Reservations are being accepted for the forum on a first-come, first-served basis through Friday. They may be requested by e-mailing to Dee Baecher-Brown, foundation president; calling 774-6031 or faxing to 774-3852.
