Senator Jones wants Hovensa to make some sacrifices for this anemic government??? Where is Sen. Jones' contribution? Excuse me, but I seem to remember that Hovensa prepaid its taxes previously, in a sacrificial gesture. Sen. Jones, Hovensa did not get us into this mess, you did.
This government has proved time and again that it is not capable or trustworthy in the money-management arena. They have virtually bankrupt themselves, and have taken down several businesses with them. Now they want to further leech the most prolific private sector employer in the territory?
How quickly we forget how many jobs Hovensa has provided to this community. These jobs filter to other segments of the economy such as housing, food, goods and services. At every stage of money transfers, the government collects, whether in the form of gross receipts taxes, property taxes, income taxes, licenses, you name it. This source was capable of providing some sort of solvency to the community. Now the government wants to tax it more??? This is a suicide mission. Were Hovensa to leave the territory, and this just might be the impetus for it, who would benefit? Not the government. Not the public. Not the kids. Kiss it all goodbye.
But maybe that is just what this administration needs to shock it into fiscal responsibility.
