UVI Campuses Resume Regular Schedules
Following a one-day closure due to inclement weather conditions, both campuses of the University of the Virgin Islands were open and functioning on regular schedules as of Thursday
All students, faculty and staff are advised to continue to exercise caution when traveling to and from school, as unsettled weather remains in the eastern Caribbean area and flash flooding is still a possibility in some areas.
In-person Registration Extended Through Thursday; On-line Registration to Continue
The University of the Virgin Islands Registrar's Office has announced that in-person registration at UVI offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix will be continued today, Thursday, November 13, 2003. On-line registration, via the Internet, will continue to be available until further notice. More information and links to on-line registration are available on the UVI home page: www.uvi.edu.
'Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way' Rescheduled to November 15; Refunds Available
The UVI community is invited to join in the "Virgin Gorda Get-A-Way" now re-scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 15. The Get-A-Way, originally scheduled for November 11, was postponed due to poor weather conditions. Individuals who signed up and are now unable to attend due to the date change can obtain refunds at the Student Activities Office on the St. Thomas campus. No refunds can be issued after 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 14. Individuals now interested in going to Virgin Gorda can sign up with payment at the Student Activities Office by 4:30 p.m. on Friday November 14th
Transportation will be on the ferry "Hurricane" departing the Tortola Wharf in Charlotte Amalie at 8 a.m. Return will be at 5:30 p.m. Transportation charges are: $20 for UVI students; $40 for UVI faculty and staff; $50 for non-UVI participants; $10 for children 3-4 years old; and $35 for children 5-11 years old. An additional $5 per person is required for BVI Port Charges. Transportation to the ferry dock will be offered at 7:30 a.m. from the Student Affairs Office on the St. Thomas campus. Virgin Gorda is a British port. Visitors are required to present a valid passport or, if for U.S. citizens, a birth certificate with a picture I.D. The BVI no longer has the "no dread locks" entry requirement.
Scientists Planning Ocean Research to Meet with UVI Community
Interested students, the UVI community and the general public are invited to meet with scientists planning an ocean research expedition that leaves from St. Thomas on November 18. A meeting is slated for 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, at the UVI Center for Marine and Environmental Studies on the St. Thomas campus.
The expedition is being mounted by scientists from the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland and Gööteborg University (Sweden). The University of Puerto Rico and the University of the Virgin Islands are also involved in the study that will focus on sediments deposited by deep ocean flows with a goal of understanding global climate transitions in the pre-historic period since the last major ice age. The University of Puerto Rico's 127-foot research vessel Chapman will serve as the platform for this study.
Opening Ceremony for UVI Model Farm Project to be Rescheduled
A public opening ceremony for the UVI Integrated Model Farm Project scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 16, has been postponed due to muddy conditions at the farm. The farm, situated on five acres of land adjacent to the St. Croix campus, was developed by UVI's Agricultural Experiment Station. A new date for the ceremony will be posted when available. UVI Jazz Ensemble Concert Rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 22

The public is invited to a concert by the UVI Jazz Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, at UVI's new Dining Pavillion on the St. Thomas campus. (Note: This concert was originally scheduled for November 15.)
The ensemble, conducted by Martin J. Lamkin, will feature several local artists, including pianist Louis Taylor, UVI vocalist Danielle Greenaway, Melita Etiene, and pianist and vocalist Detra Davis. Classic jazz tunes such as A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square, The Girl from Ipanema, The Way You Look Tonight and Dat Dere will be featured.
Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets are available at the UVI Humanities Division, the Music Department and UVI Bookstore as well as from ensemble members. For details contact Martin Lamkin at 693-1194.
UVI Trumpeter Hendricks to Present Senior Recital Nov. 16
University of the Virgin Islands trumpeter Kevre L. Hendricks will present his senior recital by at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, in the UVI Music Education Building on the St. Thomas campus. Admission is free.
ASE Technician Test Scheduled November 13, 18 and 20
ASE Technician Tests are scheduled for November 13, 18 and 20 at the UVI Freshman Center in the Classroom Administration Building on the St. Thomas Campus. Candidates will check in at 6:30 p.m. Tests begin at 7 p.m. No walk-ins will be accepted.

The PRAXIS Examination (teacher certification) is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 15 in Teacher Education Building, Room 211 on UVI's St. Thomas campus. Candidates check-in time begins at 7:30 a.m. The examination begins at 8 a.m. For more information call 693-1152.
Golden Key Sets Campus Fall Awareness Day on St. Croix
The St. Chapter of the Golden Key International Honor Society will hold its Fall Campus Awareness day from 10 a.m. 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19, at the Melvin Evans Center Library Terrace. The chapter's many regional and international awards as well as scholarship and career assistance programs will be highlighted.
SBDC Seminars Continue with 'Business Licenses and Zoning' Session
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will offer a seminar on Business Licenses and Zoning from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 17, at the SBDC Training Facility, in Suite 720 of the Nisky Center on St. Thomas. This is the second seminar in a series titled "Checklist for Starting a Business in the Virgin Islands'being offered on St. Thomas this fall. Topics will include: basic business license requirements and basic requirements for location of a business.
Admission to the seminar is $20. There is a $5 discount for individuals who pre-register. The series is free to veterans of the U.S. military with valid identification, UVI faculty, staff and students. These individuals must, however, pre-register. SBDC to Offer Stress Management Workshop on St. Croix
UVI Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will be conducting a Stress Management Workshop: How to Cope with the Pressures of Everyday Living from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, at the UVI-SBDC Training Center located in the Sunshine Mall lower level, on St. Croix. Admission is $20, but individuals who pre-register and pay by Thursday, November 13, will receive a $5 discount. There is free admission to UVI employees and students, and veterans of the U.S. military with valid identification. Refreshments will be served. For details and to pre-register, call 692-5270.
UVI Little Theatre to Present 'Man Better Man' November 21-24
UVI will turn its Little Theatre on the St. Thomas campus into a small, Trinidadian country village set in the late 1960s for the backdrop for its production of the Caribbean musical "Man Better Man" November 21-24. The play, written by Errol Hill, will be staged November 21 through 24. Showtime is 8 p.m. each day. Tickets are $6 for students and $12 for general admission. Outlets for tickets are the UVI Humanities Division, the UVI Bookstore, Dockside Bookstore and Nisky Pharmacy. For more information call 693-1087.
St. Croix Screenings Set for 'Me & Mrs. Jones' on November 22-23
"Me & Mrs. Jones," the romantic comedy that was written, produced and directed by Virgin Islander Edward LaBorde Jr., will be screened at 7:30 p.m. at the Island Center on St. Croix on Saturday and Sunday, November 22 and 23. The feature-length film, which stars Kim Fields and Brian White, recently enjoyed a sold-out Caribbean premiere on St. Thomas at the Reichhold Center for the Arts.
Tickets for "Me & Mrs. Jones" are $8 and are available at the UVI Bookstore, Essentric Shoe Boutique, People's Drug Store and Parrot Fish in Christiansted. Student tickets, at $5 each, are available only at the UVI Bookstore. For details, contact the Reichhold Center for the Arts at 693-1559.
St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Set November 22-23
The 22nd annual St. Thomas/St. John Agriculture and Food Fair will be held on November 22 and 23 on the grounds of UVI's Reichhold Center For the Arts. The theme for this year's fair is "Celebrate Our Culture: Support V.I. Agriculture."
The fair will feature the sale of fruits and vegetables, nursery plants, fruit trees, vegetable seedlings, local art and crafts, food and more. Educational displays and workshops are planned. A special section for children will feature games, a petting zoo at the livestock pavilion and pony rides. Live entertainment will be presented throughout both days.
Best tasting sweet bread and best tasting maubi contests, and a heaviest pumpkin contest are planned. Door prizes will be given away. Fair hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Opening ceremonies are set at 2 p.m. on the Saturday. Admission is $2 for those12 years and older and $1 for those 11 and under. For details call 774-5182 or 693-1080.
School Agriculture Activity Day Set November 21
The third Annual School Agriculture Activity Day is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday November 21, on the grounds of the Reichhold Center for the Arts. Organized by the St. Thomas/ St. John Agriculture and Food Fair Committee the event will feature learning stations where students and teachers can interact with individuals and organizations related to the field of agriculture. Some of the displays will include, horse grooming, beekeeping, grafting demonstrations, marine animals touch pool, fish pot making, a petting zoo, litter critter and lots more.
All schools, headstart programs and day care programs are encouraged to attend. Admission is free. Food and drinks will be on sale. For more information contact Jacquel Dawson-Malbranche at 715-1706.
