Nov. 8, 2003 — The Private School Arawaks defeated the Charlotte Amalie Chickenhawks 16-8 on Friday. Now sitting on top as the champions of the league, the Arawaks potentially have another game against the Eudora Kean Devil Rays, followed by a yet-to-be-agreed-upon all-star game.
Friday's contest began with an Arawak posession that was promptly stopped by a hungry Chickenhawk defense. The ball shifted back and forth with neither team able to score a touchdown until a long run brought the Chickenhawks to near the Arawaks' end zone.
A valiant Arawaks stand at the goal line kept CAHS in check for three of their four touchdown attempts, but on the fourth down Vaughn Baptiste forced the ball in and then took in the two-point conversion as well.
Refusing to become downtrodden, the Arawaks mounted another offensive, pushing the ball down the opposite side for the score. Miles Davis only had to slip in a few steps to make the easy touchdown and John Marsh tied the game with a two-point play.
As soon as the Arawaks went again on the offense they relied on Miles Davis once more to push it down the field and to John Marsh to finish it for a touchdown and two-point conversion, using their prominent one-two punch to stagger the Chickenhawk defense. The touchdown and extra point would be the last scoring of the game.
Failing to overcome the Arawak defense, a Chickenhawk turnover gave the game to the now fourth-year tackle-football champions.
But the game served as a wake-up call for the not-so-invincible Arawaks. They were scored upon and won a close game in comparison to those of the past. Unfortunately for the Chickenhawks, who came into the game with fire in their hearts and minds, it was too little, too late.
