UVI BULLETIN BOARD

Oct. 30, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands Bulletin Board issued today has these announcements:
UVI to Close for Liberty Day on Friday, Oct. 31
UVI will be closed on Friday, Oct. 31, in observance of Liberty Day. University offices will resume regular hours on Monday, Nov. 3.
Spring Semester Advisement/Registration for Returning Students Scheduled
Registration for all returning UVI students intending to enroll in spring 2004 semester classes is scheduled for Nov. 3-12. Spring semester classes will begin Jan. 10.
— Advisement and registration for the Spring Semester – Nov. 3-12
— All students are requested to register via the web at the UVI home page (click on link at bottom of article).
— Personal ID numbers or PINS (required for on-line registration) may be obtained for matriculated students from advisers, department chairs or department administrative assistants.
— Non-matriculated students may obtain PINS from the Registrar's office located in the CA Building on the St. Thomas campus or in the academic services office located in the Evans Center on the St. Croix campus. Office hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the registration period to accommodate both day and evening students.
— A schedule of spring courses is posted on the web at these links:

— Hard copies of spring course schedules will be available in all division offices, student counseling offices, the Freshman Center, the Registrar's office and the academic services pffice
— Web registration will open at noon on Monday, Nov. 3, and continue 24 hours per day through 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
— Signs with more information will be posted on both campuses.
— Advisement and registration for new students will be held on
Thursday, Jan. 8.
UVISION Seeking Student Writers and Photographers
UVISION, the student newspaper for UVI, is seeking students to write news articles, book reviews, entertainment features and personality profiles. Photographers are also being sought. Students who want a voice at UVI should attend a UVISION meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in the new campus dining pavilion on the St. Thomas campus. Students unable to attend that meeting should contact professor Karen Gutloff at 693-1359.
Dr. Hollis "Chalkdust" Liverpool to Launch, Sign New Book
UVI Professor Dr. Hollis "Chalkdust" Liverpool will conduct a launch and signing of his recently published book on calypso from a socio-historical viewpoint, "From the Horse's Mouth," at 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, in Chase Auditorium (Business Education room 110). Ecotourism Presentation Scheduled Nov. 3
Dr. Luis Galanes of the University of Puerto Rico, Cayey, will give an ecotourism presentation from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 3, in Chase Auditorium (Business Education room 110) on the St. Thomas campus and Evans Center Room 401 on the St. Croix campus. The presentation will provide a summary of the most significant changes in the tourism industry in Spain throughout the past 40 years. It will also focus on points of contrast and comparisons between the tourism industry in Spain and in the Caribbean.

Nov. 7 Application Deadline for English Proficiency Examinations
UVI will conduct English Proficiency Examinations (EPE) on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campus on Thursday, Nov. 13. The EPE is a graduation requirement for all undergraduate UVI students. The exam application deadline is Friday, Nov. 7. Walk-ins are not accepted.
To register on the St. Thomas campus, visit the enrollment management office, located on the second floor of the Classroom/Administration (CA) building. For details call 693-1152.
To register on the St. Croix campus, visit the academic services office located in Evans Center Room 811. A workshop to prepare students to take the EPE is planned for Nov. 7 on St. Croix. For details call 692-4103.
St. Croix Psychology Club Plans Bake Sale, Thanksgiving Food Collection
The UVI Psychology Club will conduct a bake sale from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in front of the business office on the St. Croix campus. The club will also be collecting nonperishable food items beginning Monday, Nov. 3, to benefit the Herbert Gregg Home on St. Croix on Thanksgiving. The locations to drop off these items are in front of the library, academic services, freshman lab and the business office.

St. Croix Psychology Club to Host Lecture on Sports Topics
The Psychology Club on UVI's St. Croix campus will host a presentation on sports and exercise by Dr. Marc Lochbaum at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in Room 401 of the Evans Center. Dr. Lochbaum, an assistant professor of sport and exercise psychology at Texas Tech University, will speak on "Choking in Sports: A Heart to Head Explanation" and "Exercise Adherence: A Personality Problem?" Dr. Lochbaum's research interests include personality and exercise behavior, psychosocial aspects of quality of life issues associated with physical activity and optimal performance in competitive sports. Admission is free. The University community and the general public are invited. The Deadline to Apply for MBA Comprehensive Exam is Nov. 7
The Masters of Business Administration Comprehensive Exam will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 21 at the Marine Science Center conference room on the St. Thomas campus and the Research and Extension Center Room 139 on the St. Croix campus. The deadline to apply for the exam is Nov. 7.

Alton Adams Music Research Institute to Host Rockefeller Resident Fellow
Dr. Dominique Cyrille, the first Rockefeller Resident Fellow to be in residence at the newly opened Alton Augustus Adams Music Research Institute (AMRI) in St. Thomas, will give a public lecture at 2 p.m. Nov. 8 at UVI's Chase Auditorium on the St. Thomas campus. The lecture is titled "The Politics of Quadrille Performance in the French-Caribbean Colonies." It is free and open to the public.
Dr. Cyrille holds a doctorate in musicology from the Sorbonne in Paris and is an adjunct assistant professor in ethnomusicology in the Black Studies Center of Lehman College, City University of New York. AMRI is sponsored by the Center for Black Music Research of Columbia College Chicago and Dr. Cyrille's lecture is cosponsored by UVI's Music Department. SBDC Plans "Checklist for Starting a Business in the V.I."
UVI's Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will conduct a series of four seminars entitled "Checklist for Starting a Business in the Virgin Islands" this fall on St. Thomas. The first seminar in the series will cover business registrations. It will be presented in collaboration with the office of the lieutenant governor, Division of Corporations and Trademarks.
The first seminar is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 6, at the UVI-Small Business Development Center training facility at Nisky Center on St. Thomas. Admission to the seminar is $20. There is a $5 discount for each seminar for individuals who pre-register. The series is free
to veterans of the U.S. military with valid identification, UVI faculty, staff and students. These individuals must pre-register. To pre-register, call the SBDC at 776-3206 or visit the office.
Future seminar topics will include: registration of trade names, requirements for various forms of ownership, annual reporting and franchise taxes.
Courses in Writing Skills Offered to St. Croix Business Professionals
Business professionals on St. Croix can now improve their writing skills with two new courses offered by UVI's Community and Personal Development Unit. The courses are Essentials of Business Writing and Sharpening Your Writing Edge. Essentials of Business Writing is designed for business professionals who desire basic skills in writing letters and reports. It will instruct them on how to craft clear, simple sentences that get their points across. Sharpening Your Writing Edge is geared toward business professionals who know the basics of writing and want to strengthen their writing skills. Both courses will be taught by an experienced writer and editor who will provide hands-on instruction. Sessions will be kept small to ensure students have individualized attention.

Thursday & Friday, Nov. 6-7, 6 – 9 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 8, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Sharpening Your Writing Edge
Friday, Nov. 21, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 22, 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
The cost for each course is $150 each. Students who wish to enroll in both programs will receive a $25 discount. Space is limited; call the UVI unit at 693-1100 or email dpeters@uvi.edu to reserve your space.
MENC Plans Future Fund-raising Activities
The National Association for Music Education (MENC) UVI Chapter-1016 thanks all the patrons of its fund-raising effort for their participation and donations to the car wash held on Friday, Oct. 17. MENC will be holding additional fund-raising activities in the near future and welcome your continued support.
VIMAS Representatives Available for Mangrove Presentations
Representatives from the V.I. Marine Advisory Service at the UVI Center for Marine and Environmental Studies are available to present the awareness workshop "Mangroves: Our Windows to the Sea."
The workshop educates participants on the importance of mangroves to coastal areas. Schoolteachers and administrators interested in having the presentation made at their respective schools should contact Mayra Suarez-Velez at 693-1392 or e-mail her at msuarez@uvi.edu.
