Animal abuse should be an S-O-S call of action to teachers, community and parents. We must develop an empathetic awareness integrating concern and compassion for the well-being of indigenous and domestic animals into the educational curriculum and everyday life.
The Humane Society of St. Thomas (call 775-0599) and the Wildlife Preserve bring animals and speakers into the schools to educate students about the care and protection of our animal world.
The Humane Society of the U.S. will send educational packets upon request. (write to 2100 "L" Street NW, Washington, D.C. 20037).
Animals depend on our kindness for their well-being, and it is our responsibility to protect and speak out for their right to a fearlessly safe and natural life. Cruelty against helpless, trusting animals by those without conscience or respect for life should be a first-degree felony offense punishable by up to five years (or more) in prison and a fine of $1,000 (or more). Good luck to Sen. Donastorg in making this a reality.
