Oct. 23, 2003 — The University of the Virgin Islands St. Thomas campus will observe National Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 27 through Nov. 2. This year's Red Ribbon Week theme is "Drug Free is the Way to be for Making the Promise for 2003." The following activities are planned for UVI students and the community:
Monday, Oct. 27
— Pledge Day. From noon to 2 p.m. everyone is invited to make a pledge to be drug free and collect a red ribbon token at the new dining pavilion.
— Wear Red Day. Students, staff and faculty are invited to wear red and participate in the "Best Red Ribbon Hairstyle" contest and the "Most Creative Red Ribbon Outfit" contest. Judging will be held from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at the new dining pavilion.
Tuesday, Oct. 28
— Door Decoration Day. UVI staff and faculty members are invited to decorate their doors for the "Best Office Door Decoration" contest. Decorations should reflect the theme, but the words are not required to be displayed. Only one office door per department/ division will be allowed to enter the contest.
Wednesday, Oct. 29
— Best Cardboard Tombstone Competition. Students are invited to decorate a cardboard tombstone to reflect facts about the use of drugs and alcohol. Judging will be held at 10 a.m. in the student affairs office. Commuters who are interested in participating should call the student activities office at 693-1111.
Thursday, Oct. 30
— Debate/Forum. The public is invited to attend a debating forum from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. in the Chase Auditorium (room B110). Members of UVI's Debate Society will argue on the topic, "Be it Resolved that Legalizing Marijuana Would Negatively Impact Our Youth."
— King and Queen of Karaoke Contest. This Karaoke contest is sponsored by the Law Enforcement Planning Commission and the Red Ribbon Coalition. It will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight at Iggie's Restaurant. Admission is free. The winner will receive a one-night hotel accommodation at Bolongo Beach Resort.
Red Ribbon Week was created in honor of Drug Enforcement Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, who was murdered by a drug cartel in Mexico on Feb. 7, 1985. Red Ribbon Week is an opportunity for communities nationwide to raise awareness of drugs and alcohol abuse.
Friday, Oct. 24, is the deadline to enter the "Best Red Ribbon Hairstyle," the "Most Creative Red Ribbon Outfit," and the "Best Office Door Decoration" contest. To enter the contests or for more information, call Zaida Castro at 693-1120.
