BUS DRIVERS LEARN TO DEAL WITH ELDERLY, DISABLED

Oct. 23, 2003 — VITRAN's St.Thomas-based bus drivers got out of the driver's seat and into a classroom desk for Tuesday sensitivity and awareness sessions on proper procedures for dealing with elderly and disabled passengers.
The sessions, required of public transportation operators by federal regulations, will be given for St. John and St. Croix drivers as well, said V.I. Public Works' Deputy Commissioner for Transportation Verne Callwood Jr. Drivers for the private, nonprofit service Dial-A-Ride are also taking part in the workshops.
Trainer Mark Vinzant of the University of the Virgin Islands' University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities addressed the Tuesday group. For further information contact Dr. Yegin Habtes, executive director of the Center at 693-1323.
