National Chemistry Week Observance Set on St. Croix Campus
National Chemistry Week will be observed on UVI's St. Croix campus from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, in the cafetorium, with a special event designed for children from kindergarten through Grade 6. The entire community, including children and families, is invited to participate.
The week's theme in this, the 100th anniversary year of the first flight of the Wright brothers, is "Earth's Atmosphere and Beyond." Free, hands-on activities relating to the topics of acid rain, expansion/ compression of gases, cloud movement, paper airplanes, pop rockets and volcanoes are planned. Caribbean Cruise for Two Raffle Will Benefit Tom Joyner Scholarship Fund
In an effort to keep the Tom Joyner Scholarship fund at UVI alive, the UVI Tom Joyner Foundation Committee will raffle a seven-day Caribbean cruise for two. Raffle tickets are on sale at the UVI Bookstores on both campuses and at the institutional advancement office on the St. Thomas Campus. Raffle tickets are also available from committee members.
Tickets are $5 per chance and $50 per book of 11 chances. The raffle winner will be selected on Nov. 23 at the St. Thomas/St. John Agricultural Fair. For details, call 693-1046.
Door Decoration Contest, Debate Included in Red Ribbon Week Activities
UVI's St. Thomas campus will join communities nationwide to celebrate National Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 27 to Nov. 2. This year's theme is "Drug Free Is The Way To Be For Making The Promise For 2003." The week commemorates the murder of a Drug Enforcement Agency officer in Mexico in 1985.
A variety of activities — a pledge day, a wear-red day, a decoration day, a debate and more — are planned. Individuals interested in this year's various contests should contact Zaida Castro no later than Friday, Oct. 24. Door decorations should reflect the week's theme. Judging is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 28. Participation is restricted to one office door per division or department.
Members of the UVI community as well as the general public are encouraged to attend the debate/ forum planned for Oct. 30. The debate topic will be "Be it Resolved that Legalizing Marijuana Would Negatively Impact Our Youth." The session is scheduled for 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at Chase Auditorium (Business Education Room 110).

Oct. 30 Deadline Set for Children's Literacy Conference Writing Contest
Students in Grades 1-3 on St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island are invited to enter a writing contest being held in conjunction with the second annual Early Childhood Children's Literature and Literacy Conference scheduled for Nov. 9. The conference is sponsored by V.I. Kids Count.
Oct. 30 is the deadline for writing contest submissions.
"Who is Anansi's Wife?" is the contest theme. Anansi, the trickster spider from Caribbean folklore, is well known, but little is know about his wife Aso. Stories must focus on Anansi's wife, who she really is and what she is like. Parental assistance or teacher involvement is encouraged; however, the ideas, language and story content must be the child's. Premiere of "Me & Mrs. Jones" Extended with Oct. 25 Showing
The Caribbean premiere of the independent film "Me & Mrs. Jones" opened to a sold-out house on Oct. 19. As a result, a second showing has been scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. UVI's Reichhold Center for the Arts is using the premiere to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
The film was directed, produced and co-written by V.I. native son Edward LaBorde Jr. Tickets are $8 and are available at the Reichhold Center box office. Full-time UVI students (valid UVI identification required) are being offered a limited number of $5 tickets to the film. For details, contact the Reichhold box office. Sports and Fitness Center to Suspend Arena Activities to Allow Floor Repairs
The UVI athletics department has announced that it will suspend all activities in the Sports and Fitness Center arena from Oct. 20 through Nov. 19 while repairs are made to the portable wooden basketball floor. The work — including sanding, resurfacing and painting — will be completed in time for Paradise Jam Tournament 2003, which opens Nov. 21. Repairs are being made as part of a grant from the U.S. Interior Department.
During the repair period, the arena, as well as the second level mezzanine, will be unavailable for any functions. Physical education classes will relocate to the outside courts next to the Recreation Center through Nov. 26. Second-floor classrooms, the bookstore and other offices in the building will remain open. The department regrets any inconveniences. For details call 693-1199.
English Proficiency Examinations Set Nov. 13 on Both Campuses
UVI will conduct English Proficiency Examinations (EPE) on the St. Croix and St. Thomas campus on Thursday, Nov. 13. The EPE is a graduation requirement for all undergraduate UVI students. The exam application deadline is Friday, Nov. 7. Walk-ins are not accepted.
To register on the St. Thomas campus, visit the enrollment management office, located on the second floor of the Classroom/ Administration (CA) building. For details call 693-1152.
To register on the St. Croix campus, visit the academic services office located in Evans Center room 811. Workshops to prepare students to take the EPE are planned on Oct. 24 and Nov. 7 on St. Croix. For details call 692-4103.
