Oct. 16, 2003 – A 30-week training program designed to expose high school graduates ages 18-21 to employment opportunities in the transportation industry is to get under way later this month on both St. Thomas and St. Croix.
The program, offered through the Public Works Department, consists of two weeks of training in life skills and computer literacy, to be followed by 28 weeks of hands-on experience working with technical staff within the department, according to a Government House release.
Ceremonies kicking off the program will be held on Oct. 27 in the conference room of the Public Works headquarters in Sub Base on St. Thomas, and on Oct. 28 in the department's central office compound in Estate Anna's Hope on St. Croix. Both are to begin at 10 a.m.
The program's goal is "to encourage trainees to pursue advanced training in transportation-related trades," including work as engineers, draftspersons, planners, highway technicians, administrators and support personnel, the release stated.
