Oct. 10, 2003 – The Law Enforcement Planning Commission will receive nearly $2.6 million in Fiscal Year 2003 federal funds for the territory's Community Oriented Policing Services program, Delegate Donna M. Christensen announced.
About $2.3 million is earmarked for the Universal Hiring Program, she said in a release, and the other $248,375 will go to support technological advances. Some of the money will be used to hire new community policing officers and to develop training for them, it said.
"These grants are used for state and local law-enforcement agencies to advance community policing," the release stated. Funding previously received for the local COPS program has been used to purchase "crime-fighting and inter-operable technologies," hire school resource officers, fund homeland security overtime costs and build partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the community they serve, it said.
